The Chinese government is drafting its first animal-protection law, which stresses the importance of animals' right to life, good environment and health. The draft is expected to be launched in August, according to the state media the Global Times.

The law covers all the violations such abusing and abandoning pets, and serious violators will end up in jail.

China is notorious for its brutality on animals, and animal welfare had never been highly valued by the government.

Bears, tigers, monkeys, dogs and cats are killed for the fur and organ trade. In Guangdong province, where local people have the tradition of eating wild animals, including snakes and hedgehogs, in winter for the sake of health, illegal animal trade markets are easy to be found.

In May, over 30,000 dogs were killed indiscriminately after a rabies outbreak in China.

I must say I am glad to hear this! I was saddened when I read of the
"clubbing" of stray dogs. Animals (and especially pets) have as much
right to a decent, humane treatment as humans.

Animals are having terrible lives in China. I'm happy to see the government is paying attention on it. it's an improvement indeed. But it's only a start, still longggg way to go.
    thanks for the pic:)

They should vaccinate the domestic pets against rabies freely that is to
be paid by the local council as they do it in the Philippines. 18/6/2009.

brutality towards animals is mean and should be stopped. Especially in Asia where animals are not treated nice !

It's good to hear that they're at least making a start. They should also try and cut-down on tiger hunting and poaching.

I didnt expect the story would draw so much attention, and am happy to know a lot of people are watching at animal rights. Paying respect to animals is part of human civilization.

I was very surprised to read about this, although I'm exceptionally happy that, like Changez said, they're making a start. Any time there is radical reform in place, it takes a while for the implementation to go into effect. We probably will not see drastic changes in the treatment for several years, but it very much is a trickle down effect and they've done a wonderful service by at least creating the law in the first place. I can't wait to see in the coming years how this has taken root and the benefits it's yielded.

Well the Chinese have established a very law abiding society, with strong historical roots, and they have strong and dedicated law enforcement officials, so it is possible that this law may have a very positive effect soon; however cutting down on poaching and the like may take some more time and a greater effort of will. Like you say though, creating the law is the first step towards positive results.

Sad how animals are treated, this country also sell their daughters falling for the long told tale that they will be provided a better life. Suffering on all levels is rampant. Humans are definitely defective, with some exceptions of course.

At last something is starting to happen in favour of the animals in China. I am a firm believer that animals also have souls and as such should be treated with dignity at all times.

Wow, it truly amazes me to see/hear the cruelty that takes place with respect to our animal kingdom. Anything that has the ability to breathe the same air as we do and eat and work off of their own special instincts as humans has the right to LIFE. I think it is dispicable how this country abuses their wildlfe/animals. It relieves me know that the government feels the same way and is doing their job to advocate the condemnation of animal abuse. Hopefully, in time this will put an end to the abuse and violence done to these poor animals.

It's good to hear that efforts are being made to reduce animal cruelty. I've heard bad things about animal treatment in the area. Not only is there more cruelty, more animals are killed because a larger variety of meats are accepted as meals. Speaking of a larger variety of meats, somebody has to do something to ban some of the stuff they serve. It's outrageous. Unless you're from the jungle, you should not be eating chopped up monkeys or rats for supper.
  • Reply By Changez Changez | 5 months ago
That's awful. People eat what they do and no one has the right to tell them it's wrong to eat a particular thing, unless of course it is wrong legally, like if the animal is endangered. People's food choices are their own. Just because we don't like it or understand doesn't make it outrageous or wrong.
  • Reply By InspectorGadget InspectorGadget | 5 months ago
I never said it was wrong. Commonly eating a large variety of meats will obviously lead to more animal cruelty. Also, it just seems unnatural to eat that stuff. Nevertheless, you have a good point. It's a personal choice that perhaps shouldn't be judged. However, the bottom line is: Animal cruelty must stop.

Great article, it is wonderful that China is adopting laws to protect the animals. Without government intervention then the cruelty would continue. This is a first step and next they can look at poaching and other illegal acts towards animals.
