Hey, I'm no motoring hack; neither do I follow the day to day goings on in the motor industry with the fervor of a squirrel after nuts before winter. I guess I am just a man in the street, concerned about where the next Rand is going to land and whether Uncle Tito will give me a few extra bucks to put towards my next car. Now there's a question: Where will my next car come from? A case in point is the constantly changing landscape of the Who owns Whom in the motoring industry. Specifically the 'Opel Deal' which is all the read across the feeds. It’s like a soapie script. A parts manufacturer from Canada wants them. A Russian Bank would be a partner. The Italians say they can do better. Fiat is not out of the running yet. Apparently they have an overdraft facility the size of a midsize African Country that they can still tap into. And there's China's BAIC (?). And both the German and Italian governments are offering all sorts of backing to prevent any further job losses (and presumably export losses). So while the current GFC (Global Financial Crisis) has throttled any immediate plans for an upgrade to my old faithful, by the time I do get around to replace, where will my car come from? Will BMW still be German? Will Opel be Chinese? Will Tata have taken over the Nanoworld? Or do I actually stop and look at that white 1995 Nissan Maxima that I drive past every day while ferrying the kids to school? At least I know it was still made by Nissan.
