The United Nations has officially announced that it has run out of food to feed Nine Million Ethiopians. This announcement came as the UN declared that the port of Djibouti was quite congested and that there was very little hope of supplies arriving for the next five months.

The World body has no other access point to the landlocked nation as a border war with Eritrea resulted in Ethiopia being denied access to its ports. This means that that the Ethiopians rely on Djibouti for port access.

This season in the region is known as the “Hunger season” as it kicks in 3 months before the harvest season, when supplies are low and farmers are desperate for a good yield.

UN officials are alarmed and say that breast-feeding mothers, refugees and children will be among those who will be hit the most.

Final rations will be handed out this month and there will not be any further deliveries until September or October.

This is horrible. There has to be a solution for this. Overland shipments are rarely large enough, however there is a pro-ethiopia government in Somalia so maybe an agreement with them that would also benefit somalis may be reached. Either way it has to be done quickly because this could become the biggest humanitarian crisis in the world today, bar none. I can't believe the UN just gave up like that too.
