Citizen Journalism Sites Set Higher Standards

Citizen journalism networks Orato and Ground Report are setting higher standards for the articles they will accept. According to an article by David Cohn, Orato wants to make the site more professional by focusing on newsworthy content. The article says that Ground report is making four major changes to their website, including giving volunteer editors the ability to edit anything on the site and making new users go "through a longer vetting period."

Will Allvoices be setting higher standards? We will have to wait and see. I think it does make the site more reliable to know that every article has to abide by a set of editorial guidelines. There needs to be a separation between citizen journalism sites and blogs, so maybe higher standards is what we need.

Thanks for the interesting report on setting higher standards for user-generated news sites!

The goal of Allvoices is to be an open media site where anyone can report from anywhere. Part of our model is instant publication which would not be possible with the traditional model of human editorial control.

We believe that technology and our user-base (crowd sourcing) can help vet and promote the news and reports that really matter. We've developed a news credibility algorithm that uses multiple features and signals to help provide a indication of the reliability of a user submitted news report.

Automation, innovation, and harnessing the power of the crowd are going to be critical in building the news businesses of the future.

Keep up the great work!

rleamon, just to add to Sanjay's comment, we do not believe in editing a citizen's report, we strongly beleive in letting the world hear the user's voice, his/hers selection of words, emotion, language and bias. we do however have as spellchecker as part of the publishing platform to correct for spelling. We do try to build context by attaching news reports, blogs, vidoes images and related content to build context and provide other analysis and opinion around the user's report, to provide neutrality and context. We also let the rest of the world add comments and related material to the orginal user's report as long as it is relevant (Sanjay's algorithms check for relevance)

We only filter for spam and profane words, but we do not edit!

We also hope that our community of users like you will set a higher standard and guide other community members, engage them in conversation and help them produce a higher quality contribution by leading with example.

We don't need outside editor interference on allvoices. 17/6/2009.
