Vexed with its inability to control violence and reduce civilian casualties, the US has now appointed Gen Stanley McChrystal as the new commander of the US and Nato Forces in Afghanistan. He replaces Gen David KcKeirnan, who was sacked by the US defence secretary after an year in office during which there was a surge in violence and civilian casualties.

Responding to the new appointment, Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai said that Gen McChrystal’s priority would be to reduce civilian casualties. Gen McChrystal said he would take effective steps to shield the Afghans from violence.

There are about 56,000 US troope and 32,000 Nato forces in Afghanisthan.

The US President Barack Obama proposes to increase troops in Afghanistan to put more pressure on the Taliban fighting the Pakistani forces in Swat and other neighbouring regions of Pakistan. The US President has taken this decision to increase US strength in Afghanistan, due to the draw down of forces in Iraq.
