So I have to say that the Top 20 is bumpin' this year! If this is what they put on the table the first night then I am wicked excited for the rest of the season. Here's the recap and what I thought about them:
1. Phillip (Hip-Hop) and Jeanine (Contemporary) were paired up to do a Tabitha and Napoleon Hip-Hop routine. It was amazing. I mean Jeanine held her own for it not being her style and Phillip is honestly the best partner. This is because he stays in sync with his partner all the way through and constantly supports them, like he could have gone off and gone quicker but he didn't and he rode through the song with her. It was a nice story to "Mad" by Ne-Yo about a couple that's mad at each other and doesn't wanna go to bed angry with each other. Also the end choreography where Phillip waved his body and curled into hers to sleep was so adorable. This is definitely a couple I'm keeping my eye on for good things in the future.
2. Asuka (Latin Ballroom) and Vitolio (Contemporary) got together to do a Tyce Diorio Broadway routine. It was kind of like them doing a silent film with her being the actress and him the director. They did ok but they had trouble with bringing that energy beyond the actual steps. Also sometimes there faces fell and weren't in character the whole time which shows how focused they were on the steps and not the performance itself. It definitely needed to be more theatrical to be true Broadway and with their technique they could have been better. Mary was right, it was too safe of a routine and it's not a stand out amongst other great routines. This couple looks to be in the bottom 3 this week for me.
3. Karla (Contemporary) and Jonathan (Salsa) paired up for a Cha-Cha routine with Tony Meredith. The story was the girl flirting with a guy which is kinda the same old. They did it to "Poker Face" by Lady GaGa and it was hot! They had chemistry like woah BUT I do agree with Adam that Jonathan could have had more hip action because he tended to look a little stiff in some parts. But Karla was on fire and the girl has got crazy charisma, actually they both do come to think of it. This couple isn't as high up as Phillip and Jeanine BUT they have a lot of potential.
4. Randi (Contemporary) and Evan (Broadway) were up to do a Jazz routine by Tyce Diorio. The routine was about sensuality and connection and I have to say it was phenomenal. It had a musicality like no other and it was hot. I mean I felt bad for Randi's husband just watching it because it was really sensual but in a good way I guess because they did great. They had chemistry and developed that connection Tyce was asking for with an amazing control. Good for them and they are also on my list of couples to watch for great routines. Also I thought it was cute that they are as Adam said "vertically challenged" and they danced so amazingly I forgot how short they were. They did truly dance like they were giants.
5. Paris (Contemporary) and Tony (Hip-Hop) got to do another Hip-Hop routine by Napoleon and Tabitha. I'm not gonna lie, I didn't like it. I mean you know it's bad when you're counting down to when it's gonna be over. It felt like they were just going through steps and they didn't get into character at all. It was just real amateurish to me because with the high level of amazing dancing going on they stuck out in a negative way. They didn't get into it and I didn't feel like they enjoyed doing it. Tony has got to toughen up to do well in this competition. They are definitely in the bottom 3 tomorrow night for me.
6. Caitlin (Contemporary) and Jason (Contemporary) performed a Bollywood number by Nakool. It is so intense and I kinda felt for them because it was so difficult and so different for them. BUT they did it to one of my favorite songs "Jai Ho" from Slumdog Millionaire. They had an amazing chemistry especially when they kissed at the end....hot stuff! BUT I will say that Jason outshined Caitlin because during a portion of the dance she did lose sync with Jason and was slightly hesitating. And when the girl started singing in the song and they broke it down Caitlin looked like she was dancing Hip-Hop instead of Bollywood lol. However, her upside down handstand was VERY cool so she gets points for that. And they did look amazing....and do I sense a bit of off the set chemistry too?? Hmm....we shall see. They are in the top for me.
7. Janette (Salsa Dancer) and Brandon (Contemporary) got to do a Foxtrot routine by Louis Van Amstel (from DWTS!). The routine was lovely and I adore the song they danced to, "Come Fly With Me" by Michael Buble. Brandon is strong so he made the lifts and carriage look so effortless as did Janette. Also they were very elegant for non-ballroom dancers. It wasn't as good as some of the other standouts but it wasn't bad at all.
8. Ashley (Contemporary) and Kupono (Contemporary) perform a jazz routine by mastermind Wade Robson! Wade rarely gets a chance to come choreograph so it's really something to watch when he does to see his creative genious. The story behind the dance is of 2 crash test dummiesl one is new (Ashley) and she's intrigued by the messed up one which has been put back together many times (Kupono). I have to say it was intriguing and sucks you into it without you even realizing. I think they both played the characters extremely well especially Kupono. I really bought into the fact that he was a messed up nervous crash test dummy. And the dancing was great and fluid which helped make it more believable. Also the costumes with the white pastiness was very creative. Just a great number overall so they are definitely one to keep an eye on too.
9. Next is Melissa (Ballet) and Ade (Contemporary) dancing a Contemporary routine by Mandy Moore. This routine most simply took my breath away. Their lines were exquisite and the emotions and connection was so real and so true that it made them totally believable as a couple in love. And Ade impressed me A LOT. He is by far the strongest guy amongst a season of strong guys. I mean he did the most ridiculous lifts and he did them with such ease and with no hesitation I was quite simply beyond impressed. And the wind blowing on them with "Right Here Waiting" playing....it was truly magical. I LOVED IT! Hopefully they keep it up but for now they're up on the list for me. Also the fluidity and the way they danced in sync was stupendous.
10. Kayla (Contemporary) and Max (Ballroom) perform the last routine of the night which is a Samba routine by Louis Van Amstel. And one word....WOW! I cannot believe that Kayla has never danced Ballroom before! I'm not too surprised because her contemporary dancing was so phenom I was sure she was gonna be a frontrunner. I mean she had the sex appeal and they had such spice and energy to their routine that they brought the house down for sure! She honestly looked like a pro out there. Good for them, they definitely are sticking around. And their chemistry was strong but I'm not sure if Max is gonna stick with her throughout but she definitely lasting awhile in this competition.
Based on the performances my bottom three couples were:
1. Asuka and Vitolio
2. Paris and Tony
3. Brandon and Janette
I was almost correct but instead of Brandon and Janette being in the bottom it was Karla and Jonathon. But fortunately for them Paris and Tony were the ones chosen to go home after very disappointing solos. Next week everyone better bring it because everyone is so good this season there's no telling who's gonna win it all!
