Tehran is Shocked

Having spoken to various people presently living in Tehran, a common sentiment is clear in their voices: disheartenment and anguish are sweeping the region. While the polls revealed the re-election of Ahmadinejed was a landslide win, many Mousavi supporters quietly speculate voter fraud. It is presently unclear whether this was the case or not. Regardless of the verdict, the citizens of Tehran are heartbroken, carrying out their work days wondering what is next for their failing economy. Currently Iran's rising unemployment rate is crippling the lives of the people trying to revitalize their nation. Most students are more concerned with the lives of their generation and following generations in such a broken economy and less concerned with appearing powerful and rugged in the international community. The hope was to elect an individual who could renurture the motherland while making peaceful and positive communications with foreign countries. It seems that presently none can tell what will occur next, however everyone is praying that the betterment of the country will somehow manifest out of all this trauma.

Opposition and unrest continue as Iranians angrily dispute the victory of Ahmadinejad. His overthrown opponent, Mirhossein Mousavi, has made appeals for the annulment of the election while encouraging the country to protest in a peaceful manner. Presently, it seems that very little will change. Not only does Ahmadinejad arrogantly dismiss the plight of the battered and imprisoned citizens merely for being outspoken, but the country's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and his compliant assemblage of theocrats have called on all Iranians simply to support their president. This serves as a grim reminder: despite who continues in the presidential seat, Iran has a supreme leader to whom either president must conform while in office. What actions can possibly be taken now to eliminate the violence, fires, and bloodshed on the streets of Iran's capital? How can calmness be brought to the nation assuring them that their government has their best interest at heart? They say that glorious beginnings sometimes come camouflaged as agonizing and bitter endings. One can only hope this brutality will cease and that the next generation will rise to enter a new and marvelous dawn.

It is getting worse and worse! He said Iran is a world power because of force . He is going to go to the UN and say if anyone is against Iran raise your hand. Anyone who raises a hand against Iran will have it cut off. This is not good!

Ahmadinejad is not the president and the final result will not be known for ten days when the Supreme Council recounts the votes and investigates
the election fraud against Ahmadinejad. Just pray they find him guilty.

It is truly a difficult and frightening time. For all of us with family in Iran my best advice is to be patient and stay in contact as best you can to reassure yourself that those whom we care for are well.
Depressing and aggravating are two obvious reactions to the current state of affairs, but I'd like to remind everyone that if nothing else the the voice of the Iranian people has been internationally recognized. This not only establishes that there is a communicative voice, particularly of the Iranian youth, but also there exists a admirable degree of activism and political awareness. The right of the Iranian people to select a candidate in these elections and cast a vote is not undervalued or taken for granted and never has been.
This particular attempt to exercise democracy may be regarded as a historical effort. We have also witnessed failed attempts in the United States, which touts itself as an ideal democracy, I am referring to recent history of a past now only eight and a half years old.
The excitement and uproar that preceded the election, over 80% voter turn out during, and demands for investigation of potentially fraudulent activity now all remind us of how much this means to the people it really matters to the most, the people in Iran.
