Manager Bruce Bochy decided to give some regulars a day off in the day game after the night game before returning home tomorrow night to take on the Oakland Athletics in an interleague Bay Bridge Series. Regulars Randy Winn, Bengie Molina, and Edgar Renteria got the days off and the lack of offensive firepower showed up in this lineup full of a few regulars and many bench guys.
The Giants were shut down by D-Backs starter Max Scherzer (3-4) in Arizona's 2-1 win. Scherzer pitched into the 8th inning and dominated the Giants' hitters. Overall, Scherzer pitched 7.1 innings pitched and gave no runs and allowed only 3 hits and added 6 strikeouts in the victory.
Scherzer outdueled fellow Giants starter Jonathan Sanchez, who battled some lack of command in this game. Sanchez pitched well for the most part as he went 5.2 innings pitched, only allowed 3 hits and 1 earned run and had 5 strikeouts in the game, but he walked 7 batters and also hit a guy. In the end, Sanchez lost 2-1 and his record fell to 2-6 on the year, but his E.R.A also dropped to 4.84.
The only positives on the day on the offensive side of things for the Giants was centerfielder Aaron Rowand went 2 for 4 and firstbaseman Pablo Sandoval went 1 for 3 with a rare walk. However, the Giants offense only could muster 1 run and 4 hits in the game.
The Giants record fell to 31-28 and they remained in 2nd place in the NL West, but fell to 8 games back of the division-leading Los Angeles Dodgers.
What's on Tap: The Giants turn to ace Tim Lincecum (5-1, 2.96 E.R.A.) as he opposes their Bay Area rival Oakland Athletics at home in San Francisco. Gametime is slated for 7:15 P.T.
