Have you ever wondered where your country stacks up when it comes to the toughest laws in the world? In this article, I will examine where various countries rank number one in laws that govern the world. Also, I will examine which country utilizes the death penalty the most.

According to Amnesty International, there were 2,390 documented executions in the world in 2008. I’m sure there were plenty more in rogue countries that do not supply their statistics. The number of executions was taken from 25 different countries with China, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and the United States making up for 93% of the 2,390. Here’s another interesting fact, out of all the countries in the world, only 59 countries reportedly carry the death penalty as form of punishment but only 25 of those 59 actually used it in 2008. There were 8,864 people in those 59 countries that were condemned to die last year but only about 1/4 of them were actually executed.

The toughest death penalty laws that governed the world as of last year came from:

  1. China – executed at least 1,718 people last year
  2. Iran – executed 346 people last year
  3. Saudi Arabia - executed at least 102 people last year
  4. United States – executed 37 people last year

The fact that China leads all countries in executions is no surprise. By the end of 2008, China's population was reported to be 1,330,044,544 the largest in the world. But then again, India's population was ranked second with 1,147,995,904 and they didn't make the list of top four! Maybe population has nothing to do with it but rather the toleration level of the culture. Other countries that didn’t make the death penalty list found themselves in the spotlight for being the toughest countries for concerning other laws. In examining laws, certain countries were found to be the strictest in certain areas. The list is as follows:

Canada – has the toughest child pornography laws

Italy - Has the toughest anti-piracy laws

South Australia – has the toughest anti-bikie (biker gang) laws

United Kingdom - has the toughest gun-control laws

Germany – has the toughest internet censorship laws

Scotland – the toughest anti smoking laws

China – has the toughest environmental laws

Africa Continent – has the toughest arms transfers controls laws

What makes these countries the toughest in the area of laws is either they have the toughest penalties for the crime or it the rules are easier to break in terms of the governing law in question. Now, for all those looking for the country with the least laws…. you guessed it, Switzerland!
