Sayed Haris Ahmed convicted of terrorism in Atlanta.
Sayed Haris Ahmed

June 10, 2009 - A federal judge has found a former Georgia Tech student guilty of conspiring to provide support to terrorists. Twenty four year old Syed Haris Ahmed, a naturalized American citizen, was found guilty by U.S. District Judge Bill Duffey after Ahmed waived his right to a jury trial last week. The verdict is not considered a surprise given that Ahmed admitted to his interrogators that he videotaped several government and commercial buildings and shared the footage with terrorism suspects.

Ahmed’s family is hoping for leniency as he has already spent just over three years in a federal prison and could face up to 15 years incarceration depending on his sentence.

His older sister, a resident of Karachi, Pakistan, expressed disappointment in the verdict saying “You can’t convict someone of thinking something.” Her father, local educator Syed Riaz Ahmed, was less conciliatory saying his son never actually harmed anyone but only expressed thoughts. He said he is “proud his son is becoming a good Muslim and is not guilty in the eyes of Allah”. The defendant, who is believed to have memorized the Quran during his confinement, read quotes in Arabic during his closing statement last week.

Co-conspirator and Atlanta resident Ehsanul Islam Sadequee will face trial in August. Ahmed and Sadequee are believed to have videotaped various U.S. locations to impress terrorists overseas to convince them of their potential value to the organization. Read more on the verdict here in the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

Unfortunately this poor kid just seems misguided, if he actually did share this kind of info with terrorism suspects as he says. That's just stupid. And his parents do him no favours by supporting him; they should just be very, very, angry with him. It's idiots like him who make Muslims seem like nuts and give Pakistanis a bad name. Like the honour killing types.

Good comment Changez. I like your passion. Ahmed's footage was found on the computer of a convicted terrorist in Britain and he is heard on the video celebrating his Muslim brothers who bombed the US Pentagon on 9/11. His family refuses to acknowledge US law that says you cannot assist in the planning of terrorist acts. It is silly for them to believe that he would just be able to walk away from his actions. I hope he can learn from this experience because I believe he was easily manipulated but unfortunately the prison system here usually hardens people into criminals even if they don't start out that way.

You have to sacrifice a few for the greater good (sometimes. I just hope that the evidence against him wasn't 'cooked up'.

Very true. Unfortunately, people actually do these things and then wonder why they gt into trouble. I feel bad for kids like him.

Australian prisons are full of kids doing silly things like experimenting
with their first dope cigarette, first heroin injection shot, their first
robbery where they snatch some old woman's purse and are nabbed on the spot. Bust into a corner store on a dare from their peers, take a gun and
shoot somebody while they are drunk from under age drinking. Then in jail
they are tossed in with hard cases and learn new techniques. They would
do something when they get out and go telling people I did it because a
crim in jail taught me what to do. 11/6/2009.

Now i'm not doubting what i have read above, Changez has a good point. Never the less the kid is not innocent he spent 3 years in prison and is video taping important government property probably in order to seek out revenge. If however the kid is not sentenced seriously than the next guy that comes along may get the same treatment but was really committing a act of unruled behavior . U.S.A was made the country it is today because of its intolerance and arrogant behavior and Needs to continue being what its known to be.
