Dr. Tiller is No Hero

Dr. George Tiller is NOT a hero.

I do not care if you are pro-death or an anti-choicer… (left extreme and right extreme names for the opposite side of the fence) you don’t call a man who was still being investigated by the State medical board for suspicion of performing third trimester abortions illegally and unethically "a hero" just because he is murdered.

The murder is wrong, and the criminal justice system will hopefully charge and convict the shooter for his actions – but when there is doubt that the some of the procedures performed may have been illegal and for sake of convenience ONLY it is not only bias agenda of the media to call Tiller a "hero", but it also questions the media’s right to label anything as controversial as abortion – without placing that label in the "EDITORIAL" comment section with a disclaimer that this is the view of the author!

The New York Times labeling Dr. George Tiller a hero is WRONG.

You might call him a doctor who helped you out of a bad situation, a doctor who allowed you the ability to not face the trauma of knowing your child will not survive birth or watching a child die after 7 minutes or you might call him a doctor that helped you not face the reality you would have to be a single mom forever.

But NOT a hero.

Here is the definition of a HERO:
1. a man of distinguished courage or ability, admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities.

2. a person who, in the opinion of others, has heroic qualities or has performed a heroic act and is regarded as a model or ideal: He was a local hero when he saved the drowning child.

Tiller’s abortions were scrutinized and questioned by former Kansas Attorney General Phill Kline. Kline called in Dr. Paul McHugh is a Professor of Psychiatry at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine who found it was indeed true that Tiller was performing late term abortions for "trivial" reasons. Additionally, questions were raised as to whether employees of Tiller and Planned Parenthood were told by Dr. Tiller to falsify a fetus’s gestational age if it bordered 2nd trimester.

August 3, 2007 Dr. Tiller was charged with 19 counts of illegal late term abortions. He was tried and he was acquitted but the State board was still investigating Dr. Tiller at the time of his death.

After Dr. Tiller’s MURDER (it was indeed a murder which I do not at all condone) blogger Jodi Jacobson wrote a blog article on www.rhrealitycheck.org where she repeatedly refers to "right wing extremists" that painted Dr. Tiller in the wrong light and at close offers links to donate to the "George Tiller Memorial Abortion Fund" c/o the "National Network of Abortion Funds" or "The Women's Reproductive Rights Assistance Project on the name of Dr. George Tiller."

Now let’s be clear – there may indeed have been cases and in all likelihood there were, where Dr. Tiller performed a late term abortion to prevent the death of the mother. However, there is strong evidence that there were also cases performed for convenience and what the LEFT wing refuses to accept is that in these cases, doctors SHOULD be held accountable and arrested for criminal and unlawful acts.

Jacobson’s blog says nothing of the charges brought against Tiller, only that he was a victim of "irresponsible journalistic hacks like Bill O'Reilly" and more referring to Chris Matthews and Will Saletan. What the Left Wing movement never accepts is that there is a line… and they cannot have the law work in their favor one day and denounce it the next. They cannot advocate for the Human rights of prisoners of war and for illegal aliens, but not for the rights of babies who are VERY CAPABLE of survival outside the womb - as a CHOICE.

Painting Tiller as a hero to "choice" when he is being investigated by the State Medical Board for breaking the law and performing barbaric procedures for reasons NOT legal – is an example of irresponsible journalism.

Late term abortion is a brutal and horrific procedure: http://www.priestsforlife.org/partialbirth.html#showit

and it should NEVER be allowed based on convenience. EVER.

We may never know the amount of later term D & X procedures Dr. Tiller did for the sake of convenience…but we will hear many stories of instances where he saved the mother and I am sure their gratitude will be great.

However, although purely speculative, it is indeed possible he was not always up front in his procedures as evidenced in testimonies and review of his medical files.

His relationship and contritutions to Democratic Gov. Kathleen Sebelius should also be investigated as she vetoed a bill setting minimum health and safety standards for abortion clinics, and many other anti-abortion legislation placed before her after her election.

That said… NO ONE should be calling this man a HERO especially – the media.

**Author's note:
Kathleen Sebelius is now Secretary of Health and Human Services under the Obama administration.

AMEN! He is no hero. His killer is no hero. The media is a disgrace. "Dr" Tiller has now learned just how wrong he was and for that I do mourn his death. I mourn for his family and how misguided so many are that believe what he did was honorable.

Thank you for your article and you are far from alone in your feelings on this issue.

    Maryan,

That was an insighful bit. Murder; of a born human or an unborn human is a crime, and should be treated as such. Now if he had done something outstanding for humanity or science or etc. then that may have classified him as a hero. However, given his credentials ... errr... I too will highly disagree with NYT.

Some people have co-opted the word Hero to mean someone who they admire, or think others should admire. Courage and self-sacrifice no longer enter into these sort of peoples' use of the term. You see the same thing where a child is suffering with an illness, and they assume that he or she is Courageous. They have no way of knowing whether or not this is true. This is a well-written article, drawing 2 issues I recently commented on into one story: the grisly death of Tiller, and the lack of journalistic integrity in correctly reporting it. Well-done.

Abortion is not a crime. I don't know about the legality of third trimester abortions, or what Tiller was doing, but honestly, it's the mother's choice and society has no right to regulate her decision; just to educate her about how to make it Right?

    MaryAnne,

You are right on point. This guy is no hero. A day later after this incident occured, a converted Muslim shot and killed a recruting officer and wounded another in Arkansas. Where was the media coverage on this tragedy? CNN dedicated 190 minutes of coverage to the Tiller story and 36 minutes to the murder of the recruit... Don't you think one of our American Troops would be more likely to be labeled a hero?

This mentality of killing unborn babies has crept into the consciousness of millions who follw the lead of our President who is the most Pro-abortion President in history.
I understand that it is a womans choice, but the Catholic church says life begins at conception, so with that being said, Tiller was a killer himself.

I wouldn't have called the good doctor a hero but that doesn't make him a villian either. You will pardon me if I am dubious as to the objectivity of the former Kansas Attorney General. And apparently the only formal investigation of him resulted in his acquittal of all charges.

Why is it that in all these discussions the voices of the mothers are never heard? Personally, I find it hard to believe that a woman who is okay with her pregnancy for 6 or 7 months would suddenly wake up and for no good reason decide upon a procedure that is usually done only in extremis.

Chagez - third term abortion is SEVERLY restricted in the United States and in the State where Dr. Tiller practiced third term abortions required two physicians to certify in writing that the abortion is necessary to preserve the woman's life or health. He was one of the few doctors in this country that specialized in third trimester abortions. His practice has been under fore for many years, he has been arrested and aquitted for numerous claims and at the time of his death although aquitted by the jury, he was still under investigation for his practices.

Abortion is not a crime - but there are restrictions.

GJLau - I agree on the villian comment - as my article states - he was acquitted on all 19 charges but was still being investigated by the State Medical Licensing board as to whether he properly followed the second doctor necessity.

As for whether a mother would wake up at 6 or 7 months and just decide she does not want a baby anymore - I would agree it is hard to believe. However, it happens and the question of choice in the third trimester is different then the question of choice in the first two where the fetus could NOT survive outside the uterus.

I am certain there are many women that believed what Tiller did was just. We will most likely never know the State Medical board's decision after investigating his files in greater depth as they will most likely drop the investigation at this point.

Redhanded - Obama IS the most abortion friendly president ever. Not only does he agree with late term abortions but he also voted that the child who survived this partial birth abortion be forced to die anyway.

Lastly - before anyone shouts out I am a pro-lifer - note, I am pro-choice... and agree the woman is the only one who should be allowed to make the decision - up to the point of viability. After that, I believe their should be a voice for the child as well.

Thanks everyone for taking time to comment.

Rather what the Dr. was doing was right or wrong his asassination was wrong. It is at Gods discretion, not ours who lives or dies.

As a single mother myself, I was faced with the decision of an abortion. After accompanying a friend to receive an abortion, and the empty eyes she carried long after, I knew I would never be able to forgive my selfish actions.

I am sure I will have many people disagree with me fully, and sling their angry views upon me. That's fine. I am not trying to condone the act or non-act of abortions; I just knew it wasn't what I would want in the end for my child.

However, I do NOT believe that this man was a hero in any sense of the word. Like the above stated, there are RESTRICTIONS, and personally I believe 3rd trimester abortions are uncalled for. Obviously, I am pro-life, but I understand there are certain cases where abortion is the ONLY option.

I do not believe that anyone should be murdered. I personally, would have rather someone of his profession, deal with the guilt and consciousness of his actions.

My problem with this whole unfortunate situation is that anyone that commits murder is wrong, people that murder family members in front of family are wrong: people that use any "religious belief" to excuse bad behavior are wrong & they are SUPREMELY wrong to then commit said "religious act" in a "House of Worship".
Anyone defending in any way the behavior described above is only finding a way to make murderous fools into heroes after they by their actions turned people "under investigation" into martyrs rather the criminals they might have been proven to be had the murderous fool allowed them to live through the investigative process.

Teach people to follow our constitutional rights & you may possibly create fewer martyrs.
