CITIZEN JOURNALISM PROGRAMME LAUNCHED AT COMMUNITY GRASS ROOT LEVEL TO EMPOWER MARGINALIZED COMMUNITIES TO REPORT ON SOCIO-ECONOMIC ISSUES.
Islamabad, 9th June 2009 – SAMAA TV, one of Pakistan’s leading Urdu news channel has signed a MoU with the Rotary Club of Islamabad Metropolitan (RCIM) for a media development...
This is a good initiative and particularly important for Pakistan since finding the right information and getting it out there is something we have found so difficult to do in the past. What is the structure of this initiative and how will it continue to work?
This initiative is one part of the larger citizen journalism programme, which SAMAA TV has launched in Pakistan. We are working with various stakeholders, incl. Government and communities and have developed and will continue to develop opportunities through which the general public can be engaged and report on their own issues. SAMAA TV website has also launched I-SAMAA which is a direct access to upload reports, pictures and stories relevant to their communities and society. Through this, we have achieved a direct information flow as well as empowered the local citizen to take ownership of the positive development of its community.
That's good to hear. I'm happy to see Samaa taking the lead on citizen journalism and giving people a voice. I visited the site though I found it hard to use. My question is how does the program work?
A committee will be established at the government school level comprising of representatives of the parent teacher association, samaa and the federal department of education. This committee will liaison with the journalist network for dissemination of news and other coverages required. All citizens will have access to contact the representatives for reporting on their issues....furthermore awareness activities on issues will be held to promote the issues and create platforms for the communities.
The Government in Pakistan is doing better than expected. This new citizen journalism bit of reaching out to the masses will bring more transparency towards the nebulous structure of the tattered country.
Hina, while I always support any initiative on information sharing and free speech, I'm also very critical and skeptical of any program that involves the government precisely because they usually have no idea what they're doing and because they have a vested interest in making sure the news stays hidden. So with that in mind let me just ask what the platforms are for the news dissemination and how citizens are supposed to interact i.e. is it an online community like this, or will there be television or print access for citizens wanting to send in news reports. Also, is Samaa running this or the Min. of Ed.?
Sama Tv is a very popular Channal. and its differnt type of presention. and when i see TV then see sama too. but one advoice to sama that mostly areas are not shown sama channal. it must going all area of pakistan. in lahore many areas not see the sama. cable operator must on this sama
If you want to add your voice and contribute to this existing news event, use the event code (Event Code: @3406829), that you will find on each news event page, as the first word of the SMS or MMS message followed by a space then add your contribution (text, image or video). For example: @3406829 This is an amazing video of Greg Norman hitting a hole-in-one in Sydney, Australia. The first word of the message should be @3406829 (event code), to make sure the system attaches your voice to the right news event.
