The Made-in-India tag

New Delhi : India | 5 months ago

A large consignment of drugs has been seized in Nigeria – it bears the label ‘made-in-India’ and is fake – actually manufactured in China! The authorities have taken up the matter with the Chinese authorities and harbor apprehensions that this might be the tip of the iceberg. Indian markets are usually flooded with goods labeled Made-in-China. These come at rock bottom prices and are gobbled by the common man – from strings of colored bulbs for Divali to hand held pumps for Holi, the Chinese supply them all. At one point of time, toys made in China were banned because the material used for manufacture of toys was harmful to babies. But, the trend of reportedly passing off fake drugs by China as Made-in-India stuff, that has now been revealed, needs to be investigated. There could be more than what meets the eye.

Like an incident that happened in the Philippines about five years ago. A
shipping container arrived in Manila from China that was packed chock a
block full with cartons of supposedly baking soda, Bitsen was printed on
all the plastic sachets but the customs got suspicious when nobody tried
to claim it. They tested the contents and found it was heroin packed up
as baking soda to be sold in the black markets of Manila. They loaded the
container on a truck after they made contact with the woman who's address
it was to be taken to and the media made a big scream about the drugs. In this case they missed the pusher/importer with the interference of the news crew because the woman packed her bags and fled back to China
giving them a slip. The drugs were destroyed but the woman was never seen or heard of again. 10/6/2009.
