BBC NEWS | Middle East and Republican Reaction: Obama's Cairo speech - Israel ...

Mideast Leaders React To Obama's Cairo Speech | AHN | June 4, 2009

During the Bush misadministration we observed that Bush was the only President I observed that was capable of talking out of both sides of his mouth while his foot was in it, shit eating smirk on his face the entire time. Mr. say one thing and do another! You never knew where you stood beyond knowing he was not going to come through with his promises!

As for the middle east there was two voices! General Powell was the voice of moderation that truly wanted equality and peace. When he went to the middle east and tried to repair damage in the middle east particularly between Palestine and Israel Powell knew he was out on a limb. Cheney would then go to work and cut the roots to that limb out from underneath him. No one at all knew where they stood or where we stood.

As a misadministration Bush routinely said one thing in private and another in public. Obama had to change that and he did! Obama reassured the middle east we would now speak and act as one voice. What was said in private would be what they heard in public. They would be treated as an equal with respect and know where they stood. Peace justice and equality was now in their hands! Not in the hands of extremists, not in the hands of terrorists Republicans or their own.

The middle east generally liked what they heard as did the rest of the world. However the middle east rightly says now it is time to stop talking the talk and walk the walk. Let's see some action now! Israel now knows they can no longer be the bully. No more settlements! They are no longer the prodigal favorite son in the middle east. The middle east now has a shot with Obama as the honest broker! Their is now a chance for equal rights with mutual respect and respected boundaries.

Everyone was generally positive except for those in the Middle east seen as extremists, terrorists, or the Republicans. The Gauntlet has been thrown down in the middle east by Obama and I believe they will pick it up and repair the mess Republicans under Bush created for their new middle east order and Republicans are peeved.

Democratic Congressman D. Kieth Ellison a Muslim from Minnesota is the Congressman is the Congressman Obama was talking about when he said he was sworn in on Thomas Jefferson's Holy Koran. He was quite impressed with Obama's speech both as a Muslim American. He believes Muslims in the middle east and around the world felt the love and respect and will respond accordingly.

The Republican response as expected was unfavorable, a lie, and way off the mark. Cheney's daughter instantly came out against it. Without even thinking she said Obama never once mentioned Democracy. She obviously did not listen to the speech because I heard it 4 times and believe it was number 4 of Obama's 6 points. Those people sicken me!

Boehner said it was irresponsible to say Israel and Palestine shared equal responsibility for peace. What the hell is that?Regardless of what you think of one side or the other or who did what, they do share equal responsibility. One side or the other can not decide on their own. Without mutual cooperation and humanity their will be no peace.

In response to Obama's speech that ass Limbaugh said Obama is beating Al Qaeda in destroying America. He said if Al Qaeda wants to destroy America they better hurry up because Obama is beating them. That is a slam against our President and our military indeed against all of us that know he is doing the right thing. Like the middle east we too have been waiting for years for our shining night to lead us out of the dark abyss Bush has led us down.

The middle east us and the entire world have hope now. This was not an apology tour as billed by Republicans. Obama knows equality is the way forward. While making the middle east feel good and meaning it he at the same time said he would defend us against anybody and anything. This speech was a big deal! He was respectful and understanding but gave no ground. It was powerful when he said in America Blacks got peace and equality without violence and you can too. We've walked in your shoes now walk in ours!

One thing that I didn't expected was to ignore & erase Indian occupied Kashmir Issue completely from his map. What about it? A big freedom movement is going on in Indian occupied Kashmir but no words from US? That is fishy and very heartbreaking for Kashmiris.

Obama is the "used car" salesman president, who will say whatever the crowd he is speaking to wants to hear. I'm sure all those laid off auto workers are really on the Obama bandwagon now, and his buddy Bill Gates will continue to have a huge pool of outsourced workers during his tenure in office.

Can't wait until 2012, because we need a third party or eliminate the party system in general (which was Washington's belief, that party loyalties and such would corrupt our government - what a genuis), because these guys on the Hill, with the exception of one or two, are anything but statemen.

And Obama is anything but a Constitutional lawyer.

Mr. Garner,

I think that you are misguided in your analysis of this speech. Once again, I don't see why President Obama has to continously opologize for America. It was the Muslim extremists that killed 3000 Americans on 9/11.I did not hear him admonish them for those acts.Yet,it has been the blood of American soldiers that has liberated Muslims throughout the world from the aggressions of other nations.
And to compare the Holocaust and the slaughter of 6 million jews to the plight of the Palestinians today is absurd and merely a big pander.
Palestinians have no one to blame for their plight but themselves...For the past 60 years or so, they have rejected numerous proposals for a 2 state solution.. They have failed to provide their people with education, build infrascture and the basic necessities over the years and have funneled the millions they receive towards terrorists activities.
The fact that the President has a Muslim background, by way of his father does not make him an authority on Muslim relations.
One more thing, please stop blaming the Bush administration which kept you and millions of Americans safe for the past seven years..
Reply By Changez Changez | 5 months ago
You, sir, have been mis-informed. You seem to think all the Muslims of the world cooperated in planning 9-11. By the same reasoning, every American was an accomplice in the illegal invasion of Iraq. The 'liberation' of Iraq cost 650,000 Iraqi lives. Afghanistan is still costing lives. I was actually in the States when Iraq was invaded and told people, it's not that Saddam is cool, but invading is just...stupid. If you are going to do something illegal, why waste all the lives, money and time; just assassinate the man and have done with it. On a note: The slaughter of 6 million is not justification for the continued oppression of another 8 million. Before 1993 there was absolutely no proposal for a two-state solution, just a UN resolution, and the Palestinian Authority only came into effect in 1993. Prior to that, the West Bank and Gaza were under direct Israeli control and occupation. Surprisingly, I don't think you knew this.
Reply By Redhanded101 Redhanded101 | 5 months ago
Changez, Muslims have had their chance to come forward and opologize for the hundreds acts of terrorism that they continue to sponsor throughout the world. They have not. How do you think the families of the 9/11 victims feel? Palestinians have gone thru 3 generations of rejecting every offer of independence & dignity and instead opted for destitution & despair. Going back as far as 1947 under Haj Amin al-Husseini in 1947, Yasser Arafat in 2000 and Abbas in 2008. So the leadership has opted for continued oppression for their people. Not because of the slaughter of 6 million Jews. They have funneled Billions of dollars donated to their cause and instead of building roads & schools and infrastructure they have used a lot of it to continue funding terrorism. I live in America, not in Iraq or Iran.. I feel our President should not be opologizing for our past. This country has liberated more 40 million Muslims throughout the world so we have given our blood & treasure to their cause without any thanks from them.
Reply By Changez Changez | 5 months ago
Dude, I don't even know if those 19 hijackers really were Muslim, where they came from and who funded them. I am not into conspiracy theories but I do question the veracity of evidence provided by people with a particular agenda, limited evidence as it is. It is something I would ask everybody to do, i.e. question their government's version of events. Frankly I think your argument is totally baseless precisely because you have absolutely no evidence to prove a word of what your saying aside from a quotation from the notorious Chuck Krauthammer (who's name should really say it all). Please read Israeli journalist and former Knesset member Uri Avnery for a better perspective on the real situation on the ground. He has been at it for 45 years now. Saying the Bush administration 'liberated' Iraq is like saying a rapist sexually liberates his victim. Totally untrue. And please stop putting all Muslims into the same wide basket of conventional stereotypes since I have no personal reason to be happy about the situation in Iraq or w/e since I'm a Pakistani. Are you happy when Canada wins an Olympic medal? Probably not. So seek knowledge and liberate yourself. 40 million Muslims indeed.

Mr Redhanded101 -- Bush lost the election is itself a big proof of denial of his policies. Talking about safe US then I feel sorry for you that you have zero knowledge about international issues, US is suffering from terrorist Phobia, You have lost thousands of solders in Iraq and Afghanistan and have killed innocent people in search of WMD, that makes Iraqi kids '' future terrorists and for some freedom fighters who would love to take revenge from you , and You call it safe America? -- Now talking about Palestinians I know Palestinians are not angels but then how can someone educate its people when after every single second a school is getting bombed and bulldozed by Israeli defense forces? Ring a bell? Hope not. LOL -- There is much more to say but I know its a waste of time.
Reply By Redhanded101 Redhanded101 | 5 months ago
MR. Wagas,

Try to explain this to the 3000 families of the 9/11 terror attacks...This was an unprovoked attacked.. The president at the time, George Bush was given permission by Congress the Senate and the anger of 300 million Americans to retaliate.
Regarding the Palestinian situation, Charles Krauthammer puts it in perspective in his WSJ column:

In his much-heralded "Muslim world" address in Cairo Thursday, Obama declared that the Palestinian people's "situation" is "intolerable." Indeed it is, the result of 60 years of Palestinian leadership that gave its people corruption, tyranny, religious intolerance and forced militarization; leadership that for three generations -- Haj Amin al-Husseini in 1947, Yasser Arafat in 2000, Abbas in December 2008 -- rejected every offer of independence and dignity, choosing destitution and despair rather than accept any settlement not accompanied by the extinction of Israel.

In the 16 years since the Oslo accords turned the West Bank and Gaza over to the Palestinians, their leaders -- Fatah and Hamas alike -- built no schools, no roads, no courthouses, no hospitals, no institutions that would relieve their people's suffering. Instead they poured everything into an infrastructure of war and terror, all the while depositing billions (from gullible Western donors) into their Swiss bank accounts.

This my friend cannot be denied..

Let's be real. There were no "apologies" in that speech, and as for Bush keeping us safe, consider this:

Most of the right wing is saying it's Obama's economy now, even though he has been in office for less that five months.

Bush was in office for nearly eight months when 911 occurred, so it could be said that he is keeping us safe from something that never happened before he was president.

Hi! I think you were talking to me. Obama apologized to no one. The Iraqi's were not the only ones upset because Obama did not apologize.

He merely said we all made mistakes in the past but now it is time to recognize we all have a right to peaceful nuclear power, mutual acceptance, and respected borders.
Reply By Redhanded101 Redhanded101 | 5 months ago
Jmsjoin,

How convenient...Right to peaceful Nuclear power, that is except in the US..Respected Borders? Why didn't he tell this to the Mexican President on his recent visit there? This is the Presidents problem..He never addresses a point in front of the perpetrator. He always goes somewhere else to bash or blame. In San Francisco, he talked about the people of Pennsylvania Clinging to their Guns & Bibles, In Canada he bad mouthed Free trade, In Europe he trashed the US. He never has the spine to tell it like it really it is to the people in front of him. This President is nothing more than a gifted talker talking out of both sides of his mouth.

Many of us felt they allowed 9/11 to happen so Bush could have the power to wage war as he did. He did not keep us safe! We did not have another attack because we knew about and allowed the first one. 9/11 happned on their watch for a reason. The right are now blaming everything Bush did on Obama. He is the right President at the right time that fate has brought together as he said while speaking about the Greatest Generation.
Reply By CaliforniaMike CaliforniaMike | 5 months ago
I agree with you about Obama, but I still have a little trouble with the "Neocons allowed 911 to happen" theory. That's the kind of thing that if it were true, people would have to be executed for treason.

Clinton's actions during his administration also helped create now this enemy, and our alliances which have lasted well beyond what they should have post World War II. "Trade with all nations, alliances with none," would have protected America - and just goes to show what brilliant men the founders actually were.

Switzerland has done quite well with such a national consciouness, it's too bad America has truly lost its way in this respect.

Let's not forget 1979-80 and onwards when the CIA & Bush Sr,
armed and supported the jihadists to fight their proxy cold
war in Afghanistan. And Mr Bin Laden then was an ally and conduit for the US getting arms to the Mujadeen. Billions!
Bin Laden & Co. felt quite betrayed by the US when they turned
their back on the troubled country when the Russkies skedaddled and left the country to civil war and wrack & ruin.

The founders' thoughts about no foreign alliances came in a very different world. Fledgling America was a weak nation, and Britain, France and Spain were strong. Allying with one would have made dangerous enemies of the others.

I'm always a little bemused that some people want to follow all the precepts of the founders anyway. Some are good -- free speech, etc. -- but the world has changed a great deal since 1789.

Posted By Changez Changez | 5 months ago
Great article jms. Full of optimism and hope, which are the two main things to hold on to in dark times. Obama's speech was also optimistic and sincerely so, which is what people around the world felt. It was not cynical and cold. It is pointless to let people beat the optimism out of you in the face of their own startling insecurities and inability to engage in debate. They will only run away in the face of reason. It is even worse when they fall to the propaganda of notoriously wealthy, unscrupulous and power hungry people. It is actually just sad.

I thought outing Valerie Plame was just one of the numerous acts of treason that occured under the Bush misadministration.

I have good company but many of us think Pearl Harbor was allowed to happen too because we needed something to happen to get the population behind us so we could help Britain as long promised. In both cases they could and should have been prevented.

There should be no partisanship! We recognize not as Democrats or Republicans but as unbiased Americans, Bush did all of this including 9 trillion in Debt while allowing our infraastructure to fail.
Now it all has to be rebuilt and the millions who have lost their jobs and the million who had their houses foreclosed on have got to be put back to work
Everything Obama is being blamed for Bush started. We have got to spend more than Bush did to get us out. You hear cries of Obama destroying America and destituting our children but Bush did that long ago.
At this point I believe we are on the right track to get rid of Bush's version of America and get ours back and Republicans will do anything to stop that. That is what concerns me!

Obama is in a win-win. Anything that goes bad will be the fault of the old administration. Anything that goes well will be to his credit . . of course. I can find not one single solution in that rhetoric of his. Certainly sounds good on the surface. I guess if the gub'ment takes over the infrastructure, banks, auto industry, and health care, we'll finally be free, eh?

Samiam,

Excellent Observation.

I will have to say this, without being offensive of course. but if you are of the Jewish faith and you voted for Obama in the last election, you should be ashamed of yourself. He is basically throwing Israel to the wolves and letting them fend for themselves. He is imposing his will on Israel to try and speed up peace process and is allowing Iran to go ahead with their Nuclear Program. This guy is all talk. In front of Cairo he says that no nation has the right to impose democracy on another nation, yet he goes behind closed doors with King Abdullah and takes marching orders from him.
Israel should do whatever it takes to protect itself from the continued terroristic activities on its people. When I see Hosni Mubarek or any other Muslim leader come to NYC and opolize for all Muslims for the acts that killed 3000 Americans, I will begin to belive.

Unlike bush Obama strikes a cord with muslims encouraging them to seek a mutual and beneficial partnership, He is the man we need to build a better tomorrow. Cause the old ways have failed us since they promoted fear and ancxienty amongst us. As hard as it might seem to those that wish to discouorage others to move forward rather then following their backward belief that as long as they get what they want theyll let us be.
The bush protagonists who follow his views, will have to relaise they meet the resistance they bred, sowing distrust and dispare amongts muslims and the world community. The have ignored the larger picture for far to long. And need to be reminded of this simple truth. You will reap what you have sown!
