Former US President Jimmy Carter gave a lecture on Thursday evening at the American University in Cairo as a part of his Middle East peace tour. In his lecture, Carter discussed the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, asserting that Israeli violence against Palestinians also amount to acts of terrorism, comparable to Palestinian militants firing rockets into Southern Israel. He also discussed his close relationship with late Egyptian President Anwar Sadat, the current state of discourse of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in the US, and his willingness to meet with Hamas.
Carter met with leaders of Hamas while in Egypt on Thursday and on Friday met with exiled Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal in Damascus to discuss the possibility of a truce in the Gaza Strip. US and Israeli officials have expressed anger over Carter's decision to meet with Hamas, which they consider to be a terrorist organization.
When posed with this criticism during the Q&A section of the lecture, he argued that Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip, must be engaged if there is to be any lasting peace agreement in the region.
