Reporting from Brampton, Ontario at the corner of Bramalea Road and Balmoral Drive:
Residents at on Darras Court, location of the Mapleridge townhouses complex, were awaken this morning by police and firefighters as a fire spread very rapidly from (apparently unit #126, according to neighbours) to the adjacent ones. The firefighters who have a location right across the street could walk to the site faster than taking their trucks were here shortly after 6 am. Approx. 8 trucks responded to this site along with a dozen police officers. You could see the thick smoke billowing up to over 100 feet.
A total of 8 units has been destroyed; some of the residents had to get out so fast, they came out with only the clothes on their backs.
Everyone appears to be out and safe; and you could see a lot of residents evacuated standing around outside with their children and pets in a 4 degree Celsius weather. A lot of the neighbours a little further from the fire area took some of the people in.
The police kept reassuring that there were buses coming over to keep people warm, but after 1 hour, none had showed up yet? … Two city buses arrived shortly after this.
CityTV and Global sent their crews on the scene. Holly, a nurse who lives in the complex, went around making sure everyone was Ok, helped with allowing some residents (that had been evacuated for precaution) back in their place to get some pills they needed to take, took in some neighbours, provide coffee, tea, water for the pets.
According to Mohammed who lost his home in this fire, the fire spread very rapidly as the roofing slopes of the complex are made from cedar shingles which acts as fuel for the fire. Residents did not even have time to move their vehicles out of the driveways.
Thank God nobody got injured but it is still a big tragedy to have 8 families losing their homes and all of their precious possessions.
