Fire in Brampton ...

May 31, 2009

Reporting from Brampton, Ontario at the corner of Bramalea Road and Balmoral Drive:

Residents at on Darras Court, location of the Mapleridge townhouses complex, were awaken this morning by police and firefighters as a fire spread very rapidly from (apparently unit #126, according to neighbours) to the adjacent ones. The firefighters who have a location right across the street could walk to the site faster than taking their trucks were here shortly after 6 am. Approx. 8 trucks responded to this site along with a dozen police officers. You could see the thick smoke billowing up to over 100 feet.

A total of 8 units has been destroyed; some of the residents had to get out so fast, they came out with only the clothes on their backs.

Everyone appears to be out and safe; and you could see a lot of residents evacuated standing around outside with their children and pets in a 4 degree Celsius weather. A lot of the neighbours a little further from the fire area took some of the people in.

The police kept reassuring that there were buses coming over to keep people warm, but after 1 hour, none had showed up yet? … Two city buses arrived shortly after this.

CityTV and Global sent their crews on the scene. Holly, a nurse who lives in the complex, went around making sure everyone was Ok, helped with allowing some residents (that had been evacuated for precaution) back in their place to get some pills they needed to take, took in some neighbours, provide coffee, tea, water for the pets.

According to Mohammed who lost his home in this fire, the fire spread very rapidly as the roofing slopes of the complex are made from cedar shingles which acts as fuel for the fire. Residents did not even have time to move their vehicles out of the driveways.

Thank God nobody got injured but it is still a big tragedy to have 8 families losing their homes and all of their precious possessions.

This is terrible news. It's good to hear that everyone is safe, but losing homes like this is devastating. Is there any indication of what started this fire or how it got started?
Posted By louisp louisp | 8 months ago
No, there is no indication as to the exact cause (lots of rumours though, lol) the fire marshall has started their investigation. We can only ask for prayers at this time, everything else seems to be in the works.
Reply By InspectorGadget InspectorGadget | 8 months ago
They should do their best to find out exactly what happened so action can be taken to prevent future instances. Something should at least be learned from this unfortunate occurrence. Perhaps the weather played some sort of role? Hopefully those who lost their homes can somehow recover from this terrible outcome.
Posted By louisp louisp | 8 months ago
Hi there, they are always pretty good and thorough in their investigation here. We found out later yesterday that 2 birds did not make it, otherwise, everyone was safe. From other neighbours, I learned that 2 of the residents that lost everything had lost their jobs and had to cancel their insurance prior, this is not good, I really feel for them.Keep them in your prayers, OK.
Posted By mona37 mona37 | 8 months ago
well i will look at this optimistically because no one was injured and in such a flame, it is a miracle. But i hope they have the strengths within to help them move on .

Hi Mona, thanks for your kind words, just keep them in your prayers, OK.

Much appreciated,

I live in a basement apartment in a house directly behind these townhouses and woke just after 6 am to smoke coming in my bedroom window. The fire department got there very quckly and did an excellent job. We had to walk down the street to get away from the smoke but I took some incredible pictures. Thank goodness there were no fatalities. My thoughts and prayers go out to all these families. What a horrible tradjedy.
Posted By louisp louisp | 8 months ago
Thanks 2everYoung, can you tell me how you found out about my story on here, I am just curious, and i think it is posssible for you to load some of these pics if you wanted to. Let me know, Ok.

... and yes, Thank god, there was nobody hurt physically, but mentally, that's another stroy; i was just imagining losing evrything, specially when you do not have insurance on top of it all. Just overwhelming.

Thanks, louisp

Hello
we have a friend who lost everything during this fire. One of the little boys is a classmate of my son's at Cardinal Newman. Some of us mothers are trying to organize some help for everyone involved once we get more information. My son is drawing his friend a picture to help cheer him up.
Our thoughts and prayers are with all the families involved. Materials things and memories may have been lost but all the lives were saved! We thank God for their safety and protection.

Hey Lucia, this is so nice to hear from people in this affected area; can I also ask you how you heard about my story link. This is amazing how it is getting around. Roughly 2,000 people in 24 hours is a pretty good turn out, and yes, the minute you hear about something being put together to help, we will gladly join you ... and say a big Thanks to your son for drawing a picture to cheer his friend up. God bless him, you and all that are keeping all these people in their prayers.

I beleive Dorset school is doing something as well as one of the boys is in Grade one there.

I found your article by googleing Brampton Fire May 31. I live on Dunn and was awoken by strange noises, smoke and the banging the fireman must have been doing on people's doors.

If anyone finds more info on donations for these families can you please post them.

Thanks, Lori

Hello
I have a sister-in-law who lives in this complex - her address is Darras Crt. Would you be able to list the addresses of those that lost their homes in the tragic fire. Thanks.
Posted By louisp louisp | 8 months ago
Brenda, as far as I could see, the units ravaged by the fire were from #134 down to #120, as they are all paired numbers only in that section.
Hopefully, she is not one of these units. Please let me know, OK. so far, i know Rudy in #134, and Mohammed in # 130, that's from my personal experience living in this complex.

Hey ,
I live at 75 Darras crt.
the fire was directly behind my house.
Its horrible to see such a thing, me and my family did as much as we could to help by handing out blankets telling them they may go inside if they get cold and when everyone got directed down bramalea me and my family invited everyone who wanted to come over to My mom and dads.
I send great thanks to my mom and dad who made a huge trip to no frills and made 19 of us breakfest. Right now they are starting to take the units down. i found this link because it was in my mail box (:

Yes Lucia, you definetely echo my feelings, and a lot of others in the complex and around the world.

Tonight, Holly and I, and one other neighbour and his two little girls distributed a little homemade flyer in each mailbox here at the complex, to share with them this website and where we can all come together to see how we can help. By having good communications, i believe we can optimize our efforts and keep on the same page, so come back often and you will see what is going on, and if you want to be part of it, you're welcome.

We got the flyer yesterday - we live on Dartford Road. I had already contacted our Church - Bramalea Baptist - we are trying to organize a drive to help the people who lost everything in this fire but we didn't know who to contact. We are looking for more detailed information on the 8 families (sizes of children for clothing, toys etc. to be collected) and how to get these things to the people in need. I will be calling Lois but if anyone has information that would help with this effort please reply.

Thank you Lois for orgnaizing this and putting out the flyer.

Hey Lydia, I talked to you a few minutes ago; please have the person from your church give me a call, as i already have a lot of information to pass on.

God bless you, and I know where you are coming from as you shared your story with me.

The first account for donation will be open tomorrow at Alterna Savings besides the Burger King, at the Walmart plaza.

Talk to syou soon, I am sure.

Scary to see how fast the adjoining units go up in flames.

It scares me to think a neighbour could fall aspleep with a cigarette and we could be out of a home (or worse if the smoke detectors are too late).

When we bought on Darras 2 years ago, we could not give a home inspector access to the attic. They really need to go up in all of the attics and make sure there are proper fire barriers. This can be a huge safety concern.

Otherwise it is a great community and the management company does an amazing job.

Hi I live at 25 Darras Crt and my heart goes out to everyone that lived in the homes that were involved in the fire. My husband and I opened our home up to families that were out in the cold do to this fire. If there is anything that we can do to help these families I will do so. My thoughts and prayers are with them. I received your flyer in my mailbox last night. I would like to also thank everyone that either opened their homes to the families that were in the cold or that tried to help the families who's homes were involved in the fire. It was nice to see our complex come together at such a tragic time.

Thanks to everyone

Hello! My name is Holli and I live on Dartford Rd, just behind the units that were destroyed in Sunday's fire. My friend Dana lives in Darras Crt. Dana and myself wanted to help in any way that we could so I called Social Services to get any information on the families to see what items they might need for the next few days. I took it upon myself to contact the BestWestern on Clark Blvd. for more information on the families and see how they were doing at this point. We took over numerous items including clothes for men, women and children, toys, puzzles, books and magazines etc. I only spoke with one family but have no idea how to contact the remaining families to let them know we have items to share with them. Social Services has not yet returned my calls. If anyone gets in contact with the familes please write in so we can inform them that we have items donated at the hotel and to help themselves to whatever they need. For now the items donated will remain at the BestWestern until tomorrow afternoon which is when I will pick the bins up and bring to my home until something else is organized.
Thank you and God Bless

Hello Sange

from what I have heard, I know that the Cardinal Newman school will be holding a fundraiser and clothing drive. I don't have all the details yet as an official letter was not sent home yet. I don't know about the businesses in area doing anything. Not even sure if help was even asked yet. Perhaps when more details of the fundraiser are revealed, we can approach the local businesses for their assistance.

Thank God your brother and his family are safe!

My continued prayers and thoughts are with these families!!

Well, I don't live in the complex, but I do live on Doncaster Drive, the street behind Darras Court. We got the link from a flyer that was left in our mailbox.

I woke up to a couple of fire trucks who were able to get to the fire from the rear, by using the backyards of a couple of families. From what I saw, a lot of black heavy smoke was heading South down our street, but the fire department did a great job in holding the fire back and finally putting it out.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to all the families involved. I can't imagine losing everything, especially at a time where the state of the economy is not so stable. If there is anything we can do, I would like to also hear about it.

Hello Sange

from what I've re-read I believe I am friends with your sister in law, Manuela!! Her son, David is in my son's class at Cardinal Newman. My son has been asking about him since he heard about the fire. We even called the family yesterday and my son finally got a chance to talk to David. It made my son very happy to actually hear that his friend was safe aside from just hearing me say he was safe and sound.

No letter has come home from Cardinal Newman yet, but we are all gathering what we can to help all the families.

God bless everyone.

Hi Shannon and Kimmy, is your cousin Mario?? Please let me know as I am trying to get all the information that I can so we can help out as quickly as we can.

I have arranged for two of our most senior (in years of residence here) to look after a donation fund that we are setting at Alterna Savins, right beside the Burger King close to the Walmart, so if anybody asks you, they can go there, Ok.

I am so glad that Shannon and her daughter are Ok, what unit are they in?

Hi Sange,

Thanks for keeping in touch. I have asked two of the most senior (in time of living here at the complex) Ann-Marie and Carol to take charge of opening the accounts. I am only coordinating all of this and turning it over and hopefully I will remain in communication with all as to what comes in and what goes out.

The first account will be opened by tomorrow night at the Alterna Savings (Credit union) besides the Burger King at the Walmart Plaza.

I know your brother and his family will be one of our priorities; do you where he is staying, and what accomodations they have arranged for the next while.

A lot of people want to give clothes and furniture and stuff, so I am orghanizing that alos, maybe by tomorrow I will have a drop off location.
I am trying to get the Royal bank on board also; so keep coming back here to ge the latest news.

Can find out from your brother what their immediate needs are, and if he would like to contact, that's ok too.

I heard from Brian in #122, and he is fine, has support, and is even offering to help.

I would like to organize a meeting this sunday early evening if i can get a place to hold it; I will invite all and let you all know where it will be.

This meeting will be primarily to let know what all will be in place to help our fellow neighbours; and to see how we can organize a huge BBQ-car wash-maybe some kind of auction with donated stuff, some music, I get one band together from our church i am quite sure, what date to have it, etc...

and whatever other ideas we can come up with. We will need lots of help and so far, lots of people are offering, but it takes a little time to get organized.

It is unbelievable the response I am getting from all; so, please keep posted, you can call me too if you want, my numbers were on my flyer we sent out the other night.

I appreciate your concern, and dedication Sange,

Hi Louis, I would like to get together with you or some of our friends and discuss the possibillity of having a block party, all streets neighbours and friends included and invited. Canadian Tire Distribution will donate raffle prizes and I have two if not three bands that are more than willing to do this. I'd like to do it on July 18 if possible. I was also hoping to do this in the inner court-yard. Let's get together and discuss this. I can be reached at 905-598-2313 or 905-494-5851. Ask for Pat or Leanne. Any other bands that would like to play don't hesitate to call.
Posted By louisp louisp | 8 months ago
Hey Pat and Leanne,

This is wonderful news; yes, definetely, we need to get together. Are you coming to the BBQ today (last day) at No Frills, 700 Balmoral Dr.)
I will there all day again; it's going unbelievely well'

So far, plan are in the works for an inner court yard garage sale June 27th, where i was suggesting that this would be a family day with face painting for the kids, games for the kids, etc .. Mariela at Unit 9 is having a meeting tonight at 7:30 or so, she would be glad to hear from one of you, also my son's band was trying to get in for part of that day..

All proceeds from the garage sale would go to our fund, while anything not sold would go to the church across the street as they have suggested to have their yearly monster garage sale, BBQ and car wash on the 11th of July and 100% of the proceeds is coming to our fund, incredible.

Forgot, on the same day of the 27th family fun day, I am also organizing to have one fire information specialist from the fire dept. and 1 insurance person (no selling - information only where we can ask all questions about townhomes type insurance.

Lots more in the works, but I will need to find time to type it all together, OK.

It's 3:23 am, better get back to bed, we have a BBQ tomorrow, be there, lol.

Hi, it's great to hear so many are involved in another's time of need. We, too, would like to chip in. Can you tell me where I can go to, or who we can talk to, if we want to drop off non-monetary donations (i.e. unused kitchen items, clothing, etc.)? Thank you.
Reply By louisp louisp | 7 months ago
Hi JMoney75,

For clothing articles and other smaller items, they can go to Bramalea Baptist church at the northwest corner of Dixie Rd. and Queen Street.

As for your contact, that would be me, you can also reach me at louisp@rogers.com

And yes, I am very proud to see how people came together for this BBQ and many more events to come.

Thanks for your offer to help and your donations.

TO ALL RESIDENTS OF DARRAS COURT

A quick little update:

Our BBQ at Scott’s No Frills has been an astounding success!! Thanks to all the Darras Court volunteers, families and friends who came from quite a distance to help, and to Bill who initiated all of this. With the Brampton Professional Fire Fighters Association giving us $ 500.00, we were able to achieve a record take-in for a weekend BBQ at Scott’s No Frills of over $10,500.00 that went into our trust fund for our friends and neighbours who have been victimized by this nasty fire.

A special thanks goes to Rev. Stephen Semple and their congregation at Bramalea Baptist Church for footing the bill for the meat used at the BBQ and for the cost of the banners; and also a special thanks to Scott (sorry Scott, your donation was a little higher than expected, lol) , his wife Lucrezia and all the staff at Scott’s No Frills for having supplied the BBQ, the gas, the condiments, the space and to the bun supplier (I think it’s Weston).

This weekend, we are inviting all families affected by the fire to come and meet with us at the Bramalea Baptist church to distribute clothing and other goods that we have been accumulating. Clothing donations can be dropped off at Unit 13 or to the church directly by Friday at the latest.

We need an extra 4-5 volunteers for Saturday morning at 8 am to finish the sorting before the families come over; if you would like to help please speak to Mariela, unit #9. (let me know ahead of time please if you can make it – probably for an hour or two max.). Your help would be greatly appreciated..

OUR NEXT EVENT – JUNE 27TH, 2009

We will call this day: Darras Crt. Circle of Friends Family Fun Day and Community Yard Sale
The plans are: 8 am – 12 noon, a gigantic garage sale which we will promote heavily. You are invited to have a sale of your own and donate any earnings to The Darras Crt. Circle of Friends. Any leftover articles not sold can be taken across the road from us to the Bramalea Church of God on July 11th, 2009. They have offered to host a huge combination ‘car wash, garage sale, bbq’ with 100% of the funds coming to our trust fund. They have also agreed to let us park our vehicles in their parking lot on the 27th as we would like to have as much space as possible for the tables of items for sale.

During that same period of 8 am-12 noon on the 27th we want to include as many children as possible and operate a table of homemade baked goods and refreshments. If you are able to donate any baked goods or have any children interested in lending a helping hand please speak with Mariela, unit # 9. Later in the afternoon at 2pm there will be fun and games for the kids, balloon toss, wheelbarrow races, face painting and a lot more with some nice prizes too.

PARENTS, PLEASE BE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR CHILDREN AS WE REALLY WANT THIS TO BE A FUN FILLED AND SAFE DAY FOR US TO GET TO KNOW EACH OTHER, AND TO HELP OUR FRIENDS AT THE SAME TIME.

Starting at approx. 12 am, our music groups will be setting up close to the pool area; and we will be entertained by some of the local talented musicians and singers. Mark (unit 13) and Pat (unit 75) will be coordinating this effort.

This will be a non-alcoholic event, and we thank you in advance for your cooperation.

In addition to all this fun and music, another BBQ, this time hosted by Fair and Fresh supermarket will be serving up Hotdogs and Burgers. A couple volunteers to help for a couple of hours at a time, representing our Darras Court people would be all we need, we already have some volunteers from the surrounding streets affected by the fire, but a couple from here would be great. Lydia Dawson, from the Bramalea Baptist church will be the main contact for the volunteers for this event and the BBQ will be supplied by none other than Scott of Scott’s No Frills.

The Fair and Fresh supermarket, owned by Mr. Ali and operated by Ron Persaud, have generously agreed to supply free of charge all the necessities of the BBQ, and donate all proceeds to The Darras Crt. Circle of Friends trust fund.

Information booths will be set up pertaining to Fire Safety and Condo Insurance. An insurance rep will be available to answer questions you may have pertaining to condo and content insurance or to review your current policy (They are not there to sell you anything, simply to provide you with important information). Likewise a rep will be there from the local fire department answering questions and offering tips about fire safety, along with the fire simulation house.

We would like to have as many of you participate with all that’s happening; I think it will be fun to spend some time together, get to know each other, and help our friends and neighbours along the way.

Thank you,
Darras Crt. Circle of Friends

It would be really nice & helpful if Louis could have everyone’s telephone number and e-mail addresses, you can contact Louis louisp@rogers.com or join the “Darras Crt. Circle of Friends” facebook group.

NOTE: A lot of people are asking about furniture donations, our friends are just starting to find accommodation now, so all Louis can do is take your phone number, what you have to offer and then match it as the need arises; otherwise, if the opportunity arises, you could sell it and donate the funds if you wish.

This is a last minute question, and I want your opinion as quickly as possible (drop it off in my mailbox, unit 13,ok): if I was able to arrange a legal draw for one of the townhomes right in our court, and sell the tickets at $ 50.00 each to raise funds, would it make sense and would you willing to help in selling these tickets?

God bless,
