Get ready to do some swimming: science experts warn that Greenland's ice sheet will melt within the next one hundred years and flood the North American eastern coast from Canada to the United States. Up to twenty inches of water from the present sea level on the east coast can rise, forcing inhabitants near the beach to move farther inland. States on the east coast will expereince the effects of the rise in sea level, including major cities like Boston, New York, and Washington DC.
The ocean circulation is what causes sea levels to rise and fall. When ice shelves melt, they become part of the ocean. Since the sea level is not the same all over the world, the water currents shift due to the temperature of the water. Warmer temperatures will cause the sea level to rise higher than expected as Greenland's ice shelf melts and drifts towards the North Atlantic.
