Greek Health and science researchers have discovered that a consistent intake of soft drinks such as Coca Cola and Dr. Pepper can cause a muscle condition called hypokalemia, which can decrease potassium in the blood flow through the body. Their findings were published in the June 2009 issue of the "International Journal of Clinical Practice."
What happens to the muscles is that they can paralyze, at its worst form, rendering the patient motionless in the limbs. Pregnant women who consumed up to nine liters of cola a day experienced vomiting, fatigue, and loss of appetite. Potassium is vital for the body's functioning in the blood, brain, and digestive and waste system. Drinking caffeine-free soft drinks won't prevent the onset of hypokalemia, either, according to the study. The best solution is to cut down on soft drinks altogether, or substitute something else that is healthier and hydrating for the body, such as lemonade, iced tea, or water.
