India's flight path to global success and power is hampered by a number of substantive issues, the first of which is a vast majority of the population living in the most appalling conditions, well below the poverty line. It might be well to remember that in the last 5 years India has changed ideologically as well. They have adapted positively to include Hollywood techniques in film-making, european designer trends, and other areas of cultural significance. When 4-5 (dog years) ago Gen. Zia took over in Pakistan he dragged the country down a path of false religiosity while maintaining the inequities that hampered Pakistan from the beginning i.e. a lack of education and social services. It was a reflection of his own basic lack of sincerity and scruples. India had a brief cultural reaction that began with the demolition of Babri Masjid, but you could say it ended with this last election and the utter defeat of BJP in the polls. India rejected a single vision choosing to remain open to ideas, preserving their culture through acceptance of their past and with modifications from the 'West' (I dislike that term). Pakistan is still struggling to find an identity that is acceptable to everyone, but trying to cling on to a culture for fear of losing it, rather than living the culture and allowing it to change is what holds us back. When the Kashmirir's finally decide by referendum or plebiscite who they want to secede too (which is really the only fair way), then they will take all this into account. Let's hope we have our act together by then.
