The recent cyclone Aila that swept through West Bengal and parts of Eastern India have taken its toll of not only more than 60 humans but also of the flora and fauna – apparently more than a dozen of the Royal Bengal Tigers, the pride of India, apart from crocodiles, deer and wild boars have been washed away from the Sunderbans. To maintain control over the dwindling numbers of the tigers, there are innumerable mechanisms in place including forest rangers to take care of illegal poaching – but, no one can guard against the furies of nature. The ministers would view the devastated countryside sitting high up in the air in their helicopters and might be shocked to watch, helplessly, the floating carcasses of the Royal Bengal tigers alongside cattle and humans.
