The Victoria Cross Award for Valour

The Canadian War Museum paid $240,000 for a WWI VICTORIA CROSS

decoration at an auction in Toronto, Ontario today. They feared the rare

medal for Valour would be lost to a private collector.

The medal for bravery was awarded to Lt.Col Robert Shankland of Winnipeg's

Cameron Highlanders for actions he took leading attacks in Passchendeale,

Belgium during the First World War.

Shankland was one of 3 Canadians from the same street in Winnipeg ( now

named Valour Road!) to win the award. More recently, Shankland's story

was featured in the Canadian film "Passchendaele" which also won numerous

awards! The high cost for this historical artifact is far outweighed by the

great cost many paid in the "Great War" to end all wars!

That is quite an interesting story. Particularly the bit about the three men from the same street. It's amazing that so much courage can be concentrated in just one place. It used to make me angry that people kill and die all for stupid causes and bad reasons, or because other people told them too: for money and power and all the artificial trappings of life. Now it just makes me sad to think of the millions who ran to their deaths for nothing.

The First World War was a nasty, bloody piece of business. A terrible
waste of young lives for profit and Patiotic Bravado. Made Krupps rich!

The great war to end all wars didn't do what it should have done because it only increased human suffering and made the communist states stronger.
