The Canadian War Museum paid $240,000 for a WWI VICTORIA CROSS
decoration at an auction in Toronto, Ontario today. They feared the rare
medal for Valour would be lost to a private collector.
The medal for bravery was awarded to Lt.Col Robert Shankland of Winnipeg's
Cameron Highlanders for actions he took leading attacks in Passchendeale,
Belgium during the First World War.
Shankland was one of 3 Canadians from the same street in Winnipeg ( now
named Valour Road!) to win the award. More recently, Shankland's story
was featured in the Canadian film "Passchendaele" which also won numerous
awards! The high cost for this historical artifact is far outweighed by the
great cost many paid in the "Great War" to end all wars!
