In Loving Memory of Operation ‘Rah-e-Rast’ Martyr: Capt. Omerzeb ...

Since the operation against militants began in April last month, over 1,100 militants had been killed and over 60 soldiers had been martyred so far. Yet I never felt the pain of those dying in the name of their country’s sovereignty against terrorism so excruciating as the martyrdom of my sister’s fiancé.

He was only 24 years old, a month older to me and he was very smart and handsome boy. He loved my sister and she loved him and we all loved him just as much as his own family loved him. He was engaged to my younger sister and they were looking forward to getting married by next year.

On 11th of May, 2009, he was deployed to Lower Dir as part of the Operation ‘Rah-e-Rast’ against Militants in Swat and near-by areas. He left from Rawalpindi and we all prayed for him. We never knew he was leaving forever. Let me narrate to you what happened just 10 hours before he embraced martyrdom – we Muslims call ‘Shahadat.’

It was mid-night – the beginning of the painful 21st May, 2009. He called up my sister and wished her a very happy birthday. The 21st of May was the day when 23 years ago my younger sister came into this world. He sang to her ‘birthday song’ in 6 different languages, he gave her his prayers and told her how bad he feels for not being there with her on her birthday.

He was in Lower Dir and she was here with us in Rawalpindi. She said to him, “I wish you were here on my birthday. I wish I could have celebrated my birthday with you.” And he replied, “Do you want me to come over? Should I come over to Rawalpindi in the morning and we celebrate your birthday together?” She said, yes, please, please do.”

He did come over on her birthday but not the way we wanted him to come over. He didn’t come to her walking on his feet, holding a bouquet in his hands just the way he promised to her last night. Instead, he came on the shoulders of sad soldiers in a box we call a martyr’s coffin! He had been martyred on the 21st of May, 2009 – The very day my sister came into this world, he left this world forever – On my sister’s birthday!

I received a call at around 11:30 in the morning, I was in Islamabad. It was my ill-fated sister and she was crying like a mad woman. She was literally screaming in the phone so I couldn’t understand what she was trying to tell me. I heard something like a blast in Lower Dir, a strip running on a TV channel showing my sister’s fiancé’s name among the martyred. She was hysterical. She wanted me home right away.

I left in panic, I kept praying the news I just heard was false. It took me an hour to reach home from Islamabad to Rawalpindi. I was met with screams of my sister who was out of control of almost everyone. She wasn’t accepting the fact that her love has left her on her birthday. She kept screaming, “You guys are lying to me. He is not dead. He cannot leave me. He promised me to celebrate 93 birthdays with me. This was our first. He can’t leave me on our (her) first birthday, he promised me 93 birthdays together.”

I couldn’t see her like this; I had broken down into tears. My mother was half-living half-dead. We all left for his house. What I saw there, I cannot narrate in words. His mother was still, tears in her eyes, she hugged me and the first thing she said was, “Hold on to your sister, she will die. Take care of her.” I was looking at her. This was the mother of a brave soldier, a soldier who was our loved one, but a soldier who came home on his love’s birthday but not the way any member of his family or mine would have ever imagined or wanted him back.

Even if I want to tell you what my family on the whole and specifically my younger sister is going through, I won’t be able to because there are no words to put down my pain, my family’s loss, his family’s sufferings and most of all my sister’s desolation. Two families were destroyed when one soldier died. 14 hearts wept dry of blood when one heart stopped beating on the 21st of May. All sacrifices in the name of a peaceful, safe, terrorism-free country.

Capt. Omerzeb, like many soldiers sacrificed his life for the greater good of his nation but is the nation even thankful to those families who have been left scarred for life. When sons, brothers, husbands, and fathers die every other day while fighting the militants, how many people in our nation pray for their safety, their long lives, their safe return? They know that when they are sitting in the comforts of their homes, it is these brave men fighting on the borders for them to have that sense of security and comfort.

My heart breaks every time I see my younger sister who has not regained herself so far. Who wakes up in the middle of the night and weeps like a child, who hasn’t eaten in 24 hours, and whose eyes have swollen dry of tears that have drained her off completely. I wish this fight against the militants come to an end soon. Till now every time a soldier died, we thought we felt the pain but no, we couldn’t. Nobody can until your loved one goes away when you are least expecting. Now, I can truly say I know what a martyr’s family goes through when their beloved leaves them forever.

May his soul rest in peace, may all those soldiers who have given their lives for this noble cause, for their country rest in peace. Most of all, the families who have lost their sons, their brothers, their husbands and their fathers, may God give them strength, patience, and peace of heart. I post this true story of a distraught family, of my family, of my loss, of my younger sister’s anguish to pay tribute to the brave Capt. Omerzeb for his valor and all the love that he gave us in whatever little time we spent with him. God bless us all!

It is the cause and not merely the death that makes the martyr. Allah may award Capt Omer Zeb Shaheed's innocent soul the higher place in heaven. But the point of consideration is this that both sides on fight offer 5 prayers, both side pray ALLAH JALLALOOHOO for their success, both side called their martyr SHAHEED, like it happened in Bengal, in Balochistan, in Sindh accept in Punjab since creation of Pakistan. ALLAH give us the strength & wisdom to identify the true enemy rather than fighting ourselves and putting our lives as fuel of politics.

The biggest pain I feel, is when sensible Pakistanis call the Indian Gurkha Regiment (Taliban) muslims... May Allah guide everyone to the reality...
  • Reply By inayat inayat | 6 months ago
For Heavens sake, don't confuse the issue. Their is 'no point of consideration' here Mr haseeb 726. Judging by the pic in uniform, I am sure Haseeb, you must have taken the oath in the PMA drill square and that should clear any mental conflicts about who is who. The enemy is clear and present, it is the radicalised Taliban and the army has to fight them. What promise and passion you had OmerZaib...Tum nay Gulshan kay Tahafuz ki Qasam Khai Thi. You fulfilled that promise. Heroes die young.

The biggest pain for us Muslims, especially in our country is that we are fighting Muslims. Just because somewhere someone wrong men polluted the innocent minds with wrong concept of Jihad and Shahadat, we have ended up considering our brothers our enemies. The day Taliban held up their guns against their Muslim brothers and slaughtered their throats, that every day they belonged no more in the circle of Islam at least for me and for my family.

I am sorry for your loss. Omerzeb was a very close friend of my brother (Sherry) and i have known him since 97-98. I have seen him grow and can still remember his innocence & his very cute smile. When i heard the news, i felt very sad but he has made us all Proud!

Meri dua hay kay Allah hum saab ko Omerzeb jaisa bahadur banaye, Ameen.

I have known Omerzeb for what, hardly a year I guess, and that was the most wonderful time of our lives. He became part of our family in such a little time and made us love him back so much that now since he has left this world, our world has seen no light, no happiness and the very fact that he is not here (physically) with us anymore is by far the most painful truth of our lives.

The most we can do my friend , is to make our nation realize the value of the blood our soldiers are spilling for our nation's comfort, freedom and our country's sovereignty. The most we can do is to support those fighting for us, pray for their safe returns and give them the right respect and honor they deserve for their sacrifices.

first of all I want to condole with u on this incident and I will pray that Allah Give patience to all his family members.

But the most shoking news is this, som eof our politicians are talking against this military operation and saying they will not give status of shaheed to the martyers of Pak Army, they dont have shame at all. They are not sincere with themselves with this country and most of all not with Islam.
They are talking in the favour of Talibans , those are killing, kidnaping, hanging, beheading, destriying schools of girls and flogging to innocent girls in the public, all this is disgusting.
These talibans can never promote Islam because they dont know the teachings of Islam at all.

Anyhow Majdy once again I want to condole with u and with his family.

thing to worry is you can not make them understand its a country of 164 million people , you tend to make one thing right the other is gone bad , and reciprocal.... we can hope.... raise a voice ,stand for it and do somefing about it...less there will be many Omer's losing their life and many families losing their sons,love,husbands,brothers......... and all those who do so...sooner or later are vanished from the scene...open and see history..thats what has happened...today we are fighting against taliban....than why to create them when some external power wanted us to do....ISI played role to make them and now......well i fink i should better keep me mum......

I wish I had words to describe how I feel. I feel speechless. No words seem sufficient for your loss. It’s time like these that language runs out, and it is in silence that you say what you want to. Telling Capt.Omer Zeb’s family or yours that shaheeds/martyrs live forever, and their deaths must not be mourned, seems cruel, because we’re only human, and some things are just easier said than done. Telling your sister that we are so very sorry and feel her pain, seems like an injusticeto her. Telling Capt. Omer’s mother that her son has made her proud, and that we salute her for being the mother of a hero seems no consolation at all either. Telling Captain Omer Zeb that we are very grateful and indebted sir, seems like an understatement too. Because whereas they are all true, they’re lacking. I will only pray that, may God give your family (especially your sister) and Capt. Omer’s family the strength to deal with the loss, and bestow victory on the Pakistan Army. May this country prove worthy of the Martyrs’ blood. Ameen.

I agree with every single word that you have put down here. There are no words to describe the pain and no way to console the distressed, yet we can pray that Allah Almighty give us strength to face the truth, heal our pains, give us courage and peace of mind. May Allah bestow victory on our Army. Amen

Majdy you are right we need to stand united to save our country but we do have alot of traitors in our political camp. We all the repute of JI and Mulana Desil who were uncovered by "THE News" for talking plots from Musharaf but what I dont understand is why I Imran khan is sold out on this. I was a fan of Imran Khan and used to advocate him everywhere. But listening to his comments on SWAT operation boiled my blood. I just simply dont know what agenda he is following and why he choose this to make himself a politician. How can one negotiate with these illiterate butchers who are defaming not only Pakistan but also Islam.
I am hopeful that inshAllah our beloved brave soldiers would save us and the world from these terrorist as our Army never fear to give their lives to save the nation.

Lst night I watched a TV program on this young shaheed, his family was interviewed by Dunyaa News. i saw his father,he is really very brave in that interview. He said" I m really very proud on my son, he sacrified his life on our country",

He also appealed to the corrupt politicians to stop criticising Pak military on this military operation. There politicians are criticising this ongoing military operation just to gain their political benefits out of it, they must feel shame, our young army persons are sacrificing their precious lives for the survival of our country and these a****** politicans are exploring their benefits at this crucial time.

O ALLAH ALMIGHTY, please show the right path to the TALIBANS or plz destro them. They are not muslims at all, infact being muslim is a special status these stupid, ignorant, dirty talibans are not human beings. They are really giving a bad name to Islam.

Anyhow, my condolences are with the family of this young shaheed, especially to his parents.
May allah bestoy a special place in heaven to all shaheeds of Pak Army and give patience to the families of these martyrs.

We really proud on u Captian Umer Zeb, u will be alive always Inshallah as Shaheed never dies.

Read the Mr. Inyat's comments & the advice is for a young man is don’t get sentimental on issue. Young man you may not have seen the field and fighting environments, in friction of seconds you have to decide right or wrong, friend or foe and your finger on trigger speaks your verdict. If God forbid you took wrong decision than whole life, its burden on you, I myself is victim of these arm conflict & in this fight I lost my dear friends but now those who were enemy of country at that time now have shoulder to shoulder with the present government, they are in rule. Tell me sir what to do with those of my dear friends who lost their precious lives in it like Capt Omer Zeb? In this decision if the fight is with the enemies of Islam and against kufar than this finger on trigger never shivers, but when its Muslim who offers 5 prayers, it become very difficult to pull that finger on trigger, Islamic history is full of these conflicts but when the Muslim brothers put behind their conflicts and work for the unity of Islam, the Muslim Power ruled the world. We are the true & biggest religion of the world & have command on the part of earth which is full of natural resources. This thing pinch the super powers & they create things in us by their agents like Mir Jafar- Mir Sadiq & we in our capacity have conflicts like present. May Allah raise us to the wisdom from where we understand these dirty politics of west & get united for the greater Islam. We are killing each other but what we have done for these things against us:
    1. See FITNA movie, in that they have openly
    2. In Spain Mosques are seal & offering prayers are crime & namzi is sent to jail for 2 years
    3. Genocide of Muslim men in Bosnia
    4. Making cartoons of Hazrat Mohammad (PBUH)
    5. And thousands of things against Islam by the west

Ishiq kuch mahboob k marnay say mar jata nahi
Rooh main gham bun k rahta hay, magar jata nahi
  • Reply By mustajab mustajab | 6 months ago
    1. agree with you about fitna !
    2. There are no masjids sealed in spain, maybe in some small town but nothing like that , i have just came back from barcelona and i offered my jumma prayers !!! who told you about this ?
    3. yes
    4. yes
    5. west has only one point and that is we are not against islam , we are against terrorism , and question is not all muslims are terrorists but all terrorists are muslims ? that is the point my brother where we tend to lose ! before pointing anywhere we should better correct ourselves and excel in more productive ways , countries are never run by its politicians but with technicians, professionals, change starts from a scratch and open world history and you will find it , opressions have been there with different races , with us muslims it started somewhat 10 to 20 years ago !!! on a worlwide basis , but with africans, with african americans, its been going on for more than 300 years , its not matter of Religion plz try to undertand my point of view as well , if you ever want to put west to rest and not do all these things which you claim they are doing ! you have to come up with some productive approach , war is not solution for everything, and secondly what had west got to do with what happened in lahore today ? and many other examples like this , its a civil war , engulfed upon us , i attended a conference arranged by Peace one Day , and in that conference there was a beautiful presentation by a german lady as PAKISTAN being the play ground for WORLD WAR III , it had facts figures and things which can not be denied so plz ! i appeal to you and all my other fellows who ever will read this ! to change the way you're thinking , no one is our enemy , and we are enemy of no one.... PEACE and plz this is biggest of all PEACE !

Miss I knew Capt Omer as he was my senior in school (APS Rawalpindi) and my elder brother's class fellow and a good friend. I was shocked to hear wot happened to him and i m literally crying writing these words. Tell ur sister to get hold of herself and pray for his soul and for the souls of every one who have died in this war. But always remeber that we will shed each drop of our blood for the safety and securtiy of our homeland and we can pay any price for it.

Thats all i want to say.... Wish u, ur sister and ur family and his family best of luck in life.

    Sincerely
    Muneeb Ahmed

Read the views of Mr. Mustajab. My dear brother I have been to Spain & in Cordoba (Qurtaba) Masjad-e-Qurtaba is seal, in Garnada (GHARNATA) Al-Hamra palace the mosque is only open for the tourists & all tourists visit this mosques with their shoes on, & if you offer prayers here or anywhere in Muslim ruled Spain area now, your fate is 2 years jail. I have the pictures of these places and know the victims & surfers of these laws including me. I think you have visited Barcelona & not the part which was under Muslim rule. Please do visit & see yourself. Anyhow West is openly against Muslims & the people who are opposing it are really brave souls you may say them terrorists because the act under lawful things west is trying to take by killing the Muslims is cannot be justified. Don’t look what media tells you, see behind the scene, like:
    1. 911 incidents is brain child of US & they imposed the war under cover on Afghans, with the covered and self narrated story of Usama, is it not terrorism.
    2. Where are nuclear, biological & chemical weapons in Iraq, US taken the plea of these dirty tactics to overcome the oil resources of Gulf with the support of western countries, is it not terrorism?
    3. They create the atmosphere like what happened in Lahore by their agents to have a plea that Muslims are terrorists, whereas its not, its all drama that they are playing on Pakistan just to have a entry & than enjoy the natural & un-explored wealth of Balochistan, Afghanistan & NWFP. Patthans are brave & great souls, if they defend their homeland/native places you call them terrorist. Same area & with alliance of US in 80’s same people were awarded freedom fighters, why?
    4. US & West should not interfere in the Muslim countries matters & the terrorism according to them will come to end.
    5. Basically US & west with their controlled media is biggest terrorist & they call themselves peace lovers, you tell me are they peace lovers?
    6. There are thousands examples in Muslim countries of their terrorism which they cannot justify & if anyone defend themselves they name it TERRORIST……………..
    7. You are requested to please don’t be impressed with the media reports, see everything with reality. Thanks

    Thanks Haseeb ,
look trouble comes here ! you have your facts and we all in east have our facts and same people in west have their facts , talking about Great mosque of Cordoba ,its a very controversial situation , people of spain who are catholic they believe it was a church and was demolished to make a mosque and than it was not used as a mosque but as a palace , and lastly it was a mosque , so our prospect is for not letting it open to public specially muslim public to offer prayers for them its their heritage now !! and they have made it a tourist spot ! brother i dont wana sideline ur issue and ur views but all i am saying is hatred will not bring any good to anyone of us , they have it thats what you say and believe and i say yes there are reasons and there have been problems , casues , and conspiracies against muslims , but on a positive note think !!! will it end like this ? they will fo against us and we will do against them and than there is no end !!!! i hope you understand what my point of view is, and other than Spain is no more a islamic country and so are others which were once ruled by Muslims , so we can not point our finger for what they want to do with their heritage when our own mosques and lans are burned and bombed time and again, about granada they have their own theory of it being a chapel , so just a reality check how many mandirs we broke after Pakistan was made , how many gurdawaras were demolished, hurting anyones releigious beliefs is not allowed in islam too, so i think its not even a topic to talk and discuss....

    1. 9/11 of all this do we have any proof ? none ? do we have any productive means of proving our innocence ? time spent on blaming can be spent on something productive to make ourselves better , whats gone is gone and can not come back but we can make a better 2mrw not for anyone else but for our own good !!!

    2. as i said i am concerned about what my country is going through what my people are facing ! 15 lakh homeless and no shelter to them i would concentrate on that rather than issues which concern nations who have enjoyed and lived as powers wanted them to and now they are suffering its a disgrace on humanity but PAKISTAN comes first..
    3. ok well productively what afghanistan has done in last 2 centuries and so is in balochistan and in NWFP also! looking over to my country's productive aspects we did not do anything in last 100 years in those areas , so if you want them not to come or invade or interfere or loot the wealth, change is compulsary...

    4. ok agree they should not interfere but how to make those sold elegator politicians who are coming in a row and going in a row !!! they are sold !!! YOUTH is what has power to bring a change !! so why not me why not you why not all of us my brother !

    5. look as we keep on screaming for not being terrorists to rest of the world but no one believes it... same is the case when it coms to west...media plays an important role and our media is showing all that is done by taliban...and if i go by what you are saying US is involved init right ? so y dont media tells it to people and rest of the wrold the answer is like everything else its sold !!! and talibans my ass i dont wana talk about that topic Zia Saab invention and all other inventions; everyone is paying back for it till now......

    6. for not believing there is a reason !!! and what is it!!! y no one believes....

    7. personally i am not a media person or cynical about things , but if you are saying i will still take care of it but i will say you not to be driven by your emotions about muslim passion and all trust me there are good and bad people everywhere and in times like now they do exist in our race , west might have influence our media and all but WE NEED TO BE CORRECTED AS WELL.... from top level to grass root.......

    Hi,
To say we understand and share your loss will be an understatement of massive proportion. All i can say is as Muslims we can only accept this as will of Almighty and He brought this on us and definitely theres something better in it for us which we do not know for now.
As for young Omer (May Allah bless his soul)he's a martyr and he is in a better place now and we all sould also remember the status the Almighty has promised for martyrs. Plus for all the loved ones he has left behind for them he'll always be a source of comfort in this world(with his memories) and in Hereafter as well (with his elevated status)
    May Allah bless us all.

Me n Omer were classmates in Army Public since class 6th till Fsc. after which he joined Army as it was his passion but i couldn't cuz it was not my fate.
Omer was certainly a great n passionate soldier. I had never seen him without a smile ever. A truly friendly n loving person as ever. Even when i see his pictures i see the same smile which he had since class 6th. So loving n caring person that even now when i think he is no more with us i can't believe. I certainly cannot gauge the amount of pain Omer's family n ur family specially your younger sister is going through right now. But i do pray to ALLAH that he gives u all the strength to pass the time of grief.
He was a gr8 friend n loosing such a gr8 friend is certainly killing.
words r not enough to explain or communicate the feeelings but i would say he has achieved what he wanted to since younger days.
    Masha-Allah.
Allah knows better hat we dont know. May Allah give all of you Sabaar.
"He has truly sacrificed his today for our tomorrow".
May Allah bless him the highest place in "Jannat-Ul-Firdous".....AMEEN.

    Dear Majdy,

From the past few days i am constantly reading the comments on this website about all our brave soldiers who are so selfleesly giving away their lives that it's hard now to pin point any but the most deserving shaheed for which my heart aches is Capt. Omer Zeb, an innocent yet determined and brave soldier who loved like a common man, which is His birth right, obeyed and cared like a true muslim and emraced shahadat like an aggressive and superb warrior. Allah rewarded him with shahadat at such a young age.
He is there in the heavens watching all of us paying tribute to Him, all we need is to continuously regard and honour his family and especially your sister and parents who are going through this test of time.. May Allah give you patience and strength of heart to take extra care of your sister and make her feel blessed for being associated with a shaheed......I again salute your entire family.

and shame on people who cannot think beyond their religious biases and who claim that muslims are killing muslims...how can you claim to be a muslim when u slit the throats of innocent ppl in most barbaric fashion...

capt omerzeb, as you all know him was my sanchu (his pal name was sony and his ever fragrance made him sanchu). My son, my sanchu left us for his eternal home so bravely, so proudly - engulfed in the flag of his motherland, on the shoulders of his comrades in uniform, with the winning smile, telling me - papa here is his another dream come true.Yes, he did it. I saw him growing up - up and turning into a smart, highly charged, dedicated and totally committed to his passion - the passion to join Pakistan Army.As i now look into yesteryears of his school, college and later Military Academy life, I recall each of his discussions wih me regarding his dream as to one day he would also be having brass on his shoulders. Not only ALLAH bestowed bross on his shoulders, but also rewarded him the heighest award of SHAHADET.MAY ALLAH REST HIS SOUL IN PEACE. Sonchu, undoubtedly was agreat son, a loving brother, friend of friends and an adorable comrade. He immensely loved his fiance, her parents, majdy and little JJ. I wish a son like Omerzeb to every home and to every married couple. His fragrance will keep us alive, his ever smiling face will remain in our hearts and his SHAHADAT for the honor of his country will make us feel - a proud parents. When I think that each day I go to work, have dinner with my family in peace and enjoy playing with my little daughter, I feel deeply indebted to Capt. Omarzeb (Shaheed) and many like him who are giving the ultimate sacrifice for us.
We didn’t know each other, but he lost his life so that mine could be secured. This thought binds us in a strange way. It’s not usually the case that you shed tears for strangers, but he is no stranger to me anymore. Thinking about his sacrifice and the ensuing personal tragedy, my heart sinks and eyes become tearful.
I am sorry for this great loss. The brave Capt. Omerzeb (Shaheed) he is our real hero.

    Dear Sir Afzal Sahb,
To Him we returnest!Sooner or later we all have to die one day. But,no doubt,Allah Almighty hath promised blessings of His company and eternal place in Jannat-ul-Firdous for those martyred in the way of establishing Good over evil,Truth over false.Your son died a martyr. It is indeed a great wordly tragedy for your kindself, but at the same time what an honour to be father of such a brave young martyr.
May Allah Almighty showers his abundant blessings on the soul of Shaheed, and give you courage and fortitude to bear this loss with patience.I do pray that 'May Allah your Sanchu always comes to you smiling in your dreams and shares his happiness with you to comfort you and make you realize that how happy he is in the gardens of Jannah and in the company of Allah's most dearest ones'..
I salute the young martyr..and salute your kindself too for upbringing such a great son..
    Regards and prayers
