The Congress that facing problem with its crucial allays DMK, which is threatening to remain out side the cabinet and extend outside support to the Government if its demands for ministerial berths are not honored. Another crucial allay Mamata Benerjee of Trinamool Congress is preparing to create another problem by demanding President rule in West Bengal so that to facilitate early elections.
The Assembly elections in her state are due to be held in 2011. With the overwhelming won she recorded in the Lok Sabha elections, she seems to be impatient to wait for two more years for Assembly elections. She is focusing her attention to bring pressure on Congress President Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for early elections to the West Bengal Assembly.
Her party leader Dinesh Trivedi demanding in Delhi on Thursday for imposition of president's rule in West Bengal, alleging there was complete breakdown of the constitutional machinery and people had lost confidence in the Left Front government there.
"The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M)-led Left Front government has to come to an end in West Bengal. There needs to be president's rule and there have to be elections because (of) the kind of killing which is taking place and the poor state of law and order machinery. There is (an) entire constitutional breakdown," he told a news channel in New Delhi.
With 19 seats, the Trinamool Congress is the second largest party in UPA, only after Congress. Unlike DMK, Mamata Benerjee is keeping low profile with regard to ministerial berths stating that was not a priority for the party but restoring democracy in West Bengal is.
It seems that Mamata Benerjee is seeking one cabinet berth for herself and five MoS for her MPs. Though she initially insisted on railway ministry, later she is reportedly not keep on it, but seeking one important portfolio.
However, Congress is unlikely to go for President Rule in a state where duly elected party or front is enjoying comfortably majority in the Assembly. (EOM)
