Stunt driver defied gravity on the 40ft loop!

Known to stuntmen as the ‘Death Loop’, the 40ft world largest loop-the-loop stunt was no less than dicing with one’s death by taking up the challenge. Yet, Mr. Steve Truglia not only undertook the challenge but performed it gracefully enough to later on celebrate with his team the amazing stunt he had successfully pulled off.

It is definitely in such situations where hesitation and mistake are the fatal errors. In such stunts, as they say there is no chance of a moment’s hesitation or even a slightest mistake or else death would be the end result.

But Mr. Truglia had been too timid in his acceleration; it was only for his precise speed and time balance that he avoided reaching the top of the loop and then dropping like a stone. If he had driven too fast, the G-force generated would have knocked him unconscious. But, these extraordinary images are a proof that his timing and speed were just perfect.

This breath-taking stunt was planned with the help of a Cambridge physicist and was filmed at a Suffolk airbase for Channel Five’s car show, ‘Fifth Gear.’ John Nolan who produces Fifth Gear admitted that the stunt was life endangering and if he hadn’t pulled it off successfully, he wouldn’t have been here alive.

Steve Truglia completed the stunt by precise control of centripetal force. The Toyota had to be travelling fast enough that the centripetal force generated by its circular motion ‘offset’ the downward pull of gravity. This required Mr. Truglia to enter the loop at exactly 37mph, immediately change out of gear to 16mph as the vehicle swung round the top.

He was also trained in an aircraft in an endurance training to get his body used to the stresses of the G-forces involved. The stunt will be shown on next Saturday at 11:30 in a special episode of Fifth Gear on channel 5.
