It is the night that the dancing celebrities look forward to most of all – the finals and the freestyle dance. The three couples who made it to the finals – Shawn Johnson and Mark Ballas, Melissa Rycroft and Tony Dovolani, and Giles Marini and Cheryl Burke – first had to compete alongside each other in a Paso Doble’ face off that left each couple separated by only one point each. The youngest celebrity gold medal gymnast Shawn Johnson took the floor first with her partner Mark Ballas; and earned a score of 28. Bachelor star and former Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader Melissa Rycroft and Tony Dovolani followed with a routine in which Bruno called Melissa a bit of a drama queen. The routine earned the couple a score of 29. Last up was French actor Giles Marini with partner two time “Dancing with the Stars” champion –Cheryl Burke. Giles and Cheryl scored a perfect 30 in both of their routines in the semi finals and were hoping to keep up the good work this week. The judges did not disappoint. In a performance where Carrie Ann said that she expected perfection and got it, Giles and Cheryl scored a perfect 30 for the third dance in a row.
Next came the freestyle dance where there are no rules to break and anything goes. Shawn and Melissa followed true to form aby including gymnastic and cheerleader moves in their dances; while Cheryl relied on Giles’ strengths and personality in the dance much as she did for season 2 winner Drew Lechay and season 3 winner football star Emmitt Smith. On her current partner Cheryl said that Giles has the potential to be better than former winners Drew or Emmitt.
Shawn and Mark scored their second 30 for their freestyle earning them a total score of 58.
Melissa and Tony performed a freestyle that judges said felt disjointed for a score of 27 giving them a total score of 56.
Cheryl choreographed a dance that was full of energy that judges felt was a great performance but wanted to see more. The couple earned a score of 28 on their freestyle for a total score of 58 tying them with Shaw and Mark.
The two hour results show on Tuesday will see the finalists dance one more time for the judges, a performance by lady Gaga, a roasting by comedian and former “Dancing with the Stars” celebrity Jeffrey Ross, and the crowning of a new “Dancing with the Stars” champion.
