Bangladesh and Russia has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on Wednesday to install a nuclear power plant.
MOU was signed in Dhaka, the capital city of Bangladesh, by the chairman of Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission and deputy director general, Russian State Atomic Energy Commission. It’s aim is peaceful utilisation of nuclear energy and this is the first step towards the installation.
State minister for science of Bangladesh Government Yafes Osman and prime minister's energy affairs adviser Toufique-e-Elahi Chowdhury were present there. A high-powered delegation of Russia, arrived in Dhaka on Tuesday to sign the deal.
Ministry officials said that Prime minister Sheikh Hasina provisionally approved the draft MoU last week. They said the capacity of the power plant would be finalised in the final deal. Bangladesh government has decided to set up two plants, each with 1000 megawatt capacity.
The first initiative to install nuclear power plant in Bangladesh in Rooppur, Pabna was taken in 1961. China and South Korea also approached to set up nuclear power plant in Bangladesh.
