China is working hard on changing its fame as the world 's largest carbon dioxide emitter. While the US is still discussing the necessity to build a more efficient coal -fired plant with "ulra-supercritical" technology, which uses extremely hot steam to get the highest efficiency, China has started to build such plant at a rate of one a month. With the cutting edge technologies, the most efficient plants can convert 44 percent of energy in coal into electricity, compared with a maximum of 36 percent for the conventional plants, said experts. Aside from retiring outdated, old plants for new, eco friendly plants, China has also doubled its wind energy capacity in each of the past four years, and it aims to exceed the US as the world's largest market for the wind power equipment in by the end of this year. But China will no doubt keep emitting a considerable amount of carbon dioxide since the cheap coal remains the dominant source to generate power. souce:NYT/IHT

China uses more coal than the United States, Europe and Japan combined, making it the world's largest emitter of gases that are warming the planet.

The Chinese are using a multifaceted approach to energy production, preparing alternative forms against the day when conventional forms become scarcer. They are also looking to move away from conventional energy usage and diversify and simply maintaining energy production from conventional sources while they still need it. Props. It could be a very successful strategy.
