SONORA, CA,---One of California's biggest celebration in the California's Mother Lode takes place in Sonora, CA on Mother's Day.
Every year, around Mother's Day, the Tuolumne County Sheriff's Posse, celebrates Mother' Day by having three to four hour parade and a professional rodeo: this has been going on since 1930's, and was stopped during the second world war, and started again right after the war.
The parade is on Saturday before Mother's Day(May 9, 2009), and the rodeo takes place after the parade and on Sunday.( May 10, 2009) Sonora, CA, were the parade takes place, closes its main street, Washington Street, for at least four hours during the parade.
Floats, bands, horses, and other parade participants come to Sonora to march in the parade. which many have been doing for years. It seems, people throughout central California have looked forward to this weekend. Because the weather is, usually nice, the turn out of people floods Sonora's main street to, at least, a thousand people within less then three miles. At one time, small pick-ups were parked along the parade route to prevent these people from getting hurt, if a horse got spooked. The pick-ups were parked along the route the night before---but the people went around the pick-ups to see the parade.
Within the last ten years, weekends before the parade local bandits would raid the Sonora area(P.r. for the parade and rodeo). One weekend before the parade and rodeo, the bandits raided a San Francisco Public School outing in Columbia, CA. and several children were taken away. But the Tuolumne County Sheriff's Posse found them and rescued them--no one got hurt because the Sheriff's Posse was quick in the rescue.
So, therefore, be aware of the area bandits so that you can have an enjoyable time visiting the California Mother Lode area in May.
