Gasunion Building Groningen

Say the Eifeltower and you think of Paris,

Say the white house and everybody thinks of america,

Say Taj Mahal and everybody thinks of India.

Say the great pyramids and everybody thinks of Egypt.

These buildings and sturctures have become hallmarks and symbolize citys and/or even nations. They are examples of what i call passionate architecture. Where the entire proces of building exceeded sheer convenience, thus uplifting an city. It often took extraordinary efforts to create them but the image of an building that is constructed with passion leaves an impression that will last. Every city or nation could use such an unique structure to make a statement to the world: This is who we are and that is what we stand for. It is a delicate process to create in an passionate way since every building or structure that is created in such a way needs to be unique. Otherwise the effect would be lost. However in the proces of exceeding the limits of what is thought to be possible. Often the bar is raised for buildings to be constructed afterward. It´s like when men build the first sky scrapers leading to an effort to build the biggest and highest sky scraper of them all. Often that requires an innovative approach as we are trying to stretch the limits of what is possible. And there is a great zest amongst architects to topple the technological difficultys. People need to distinguih their city or country from others by creating buildings that are a statement to the world. Something to be proud of, something people will come to see and to marble its beauty. Something that we dearly miss should it no longer be there, like the twin towers. But there surely should be an estethic value to it if it wants to appeal people and uplift a city with it´s presence. As well as a that a building or home should be build in such a way that it´s a joy to live and work there. A quality that buildings that are build out of convenience often lack. Passionate architecture is about using certain principles that make that possible as they set the standard for what is to come. I´ve added an image of the Gasunion building in Groningen, Holland because it is a fine example of the above listed qualities.
