This April marks the 25th anniversary of the death of one of my favorite singers Marvin Gaye (R.I.P). True to form, Rolling Stone ranked Marvin number six (6) on a list of the greatest singers of all time! I grew up in the streets of the Bronx and in my hood' there wasn't any Rock and Roll just a whole lot of Latin Soul. I had Motown and Soul music flowing through my veins... When you were on the streets or basketball courts hanging out with the guys and the honeys in the early 70's and you heard Marvin singing on the radio to one of his classics What's Goin' On it made you think of the Vietnam war, love conquering hate and an understanding about life in general. Then Marvin followed up with another great song Mercy, Mercy Me (The Ecology) were he sang about the environment, pollution and where the world was heading. This was thirty-five (35) years before Presidential candidate Al Gore came out with An Inconvenient Truth. Listen to the words to Marvin's song you'll understand where I'm coming from. Back in the day I was a teen trying to survive in the streets of the Bronx while learning about life. Marvin helped me along the way. He also taught me something about love. When he wrote and sang Distant Lover this song touched home about losing a honey that you loved that slipped through your fingers like teardrops in the rain... Marvin thank you for the memories and teaching me about life, love, and the world. You had a powerful message that still exists today...
