The theme for week 4 of “American Idol” left Idol hopefuls happy since they could choose from a bigger variety of songs than usual. The theme was the most popular iTunes downloads. While many of the Idols were glad of the opportunity to pick more recent titles, some chose to go back in the vaults and make their mark on an “oldie but goodie”.
This week’s performances, in the judges eyes, were either very good or very bad. Megan Corkley was told again that she was in trouble after attempting a Bob Marley song that Randy Jackson compared to watching paint dry. Judges remarks to Anoop Desai for his rendition of Usher faired no better. Last week’s contender Matt Giraud and Lil Rounds faired no better.
The youngest singer in the group Allison Iraheta took on No Doubt and brought a surprise with her – a guitar. Judges could find little fault with her performance but had a great deal to say about her choice of costume that resembled a rebellious teen who had raided a heap of cast off clothing in order to look like a rocker.
Danny, Kris, Adam, and Scott faired much better in the view of the judges, pulling off performances that the judges called vast improvements and the best yet. Proving that he is not one to pigeon hole Adam Lambert reached back into the annuls of time for the seventies classic “Play that Funky Music” by Wild Cherry in a performance that had Kara saying she could not wait to see what Adam was going to do next. Ever the respectful young man Adam took time to thank band leader Ricky Minor for his help in making the song a success.
Choosing to ignore Paula’s advice to do away with the piano Scott MacIntrye used only the piano and his voice as the piano man performed the piano man. Singing “Just the Way You Are” by Billy Joel, Simon said it was Scott’s best performance by a country mile. Kara told Scott that he had made some wise decisions for the night.
Joining the Idols on the results show Wednesday will be pop star Lady Gaga and season 7 “American Idol” winner David Cook who will debut his new single and video; and another hopeful will go home.
