22 dead in World Cup stampede

What was supposed to be an exciting game of soccer turned out to be a disastrous day of chaos as a stampede was triggered in a fully packed stadium in Abidjan,Ivory Coast.

Up to 22 people were killed and 132 others wounded. Eyewitnesses said that around 40 minutes before the World Cup qualifier between Ivory Coast and Malawi kicked off, fans were already pushing against each other, setting off a panic that led to the stampede. As a result of this, a wall collapsed under the weight of the fans as they pushed towards the field.

The injured were treated at the stadium itself and the more fatal casualties were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. The match went ahead as planned.
