Hundreds of fans with tickets wanted to catch a glimpse of their favourite soccer stars as their home team was playing against Malawi at Houphouet-Boigny Stadium in the capital of Ivory Coast, Abidjan. The Police opened tear gas and a collapsing wall didnt help the cause as well. As many as 22 people are reportedly dead and 132 injured in the stampede.
The Stadium's capactiy is 35,000 and was packed with fans eager to see Ivory Coast's European-based stars Didier Drogba and Salomon Kalou of Chelsea and Kolo Toure and Emmanuel Eboue of Arsenal play in the World Cup qualifier. Many people were treated at the stadium and the worst cases were taken to the Military hospital and also to the Treichville hospital in Abidjan.Drogba scored two goals and Kalou one in which the Ivory Coast won 5-0.
