Obama's Plan for Pakistan and Afghanistan

Today is my 40th birthday and as I woke up this morning I could hear Obama's news conference on Pakistan and Afghanistan in the living room. I got up and started to watch TV. I am very glad that the new strategy is to help develop the region and not just bullets and violence.

I give Obama thumbs up for wanting to create development areas in the tribal areas. The goal is development. Last year when I talked to the tribal people, while I was covering the Pakistani elections as a citizen reporter, they all told me they needed development and not guns or bombs. They were very destitute and only turned to violence when there was no hope for the future and their innocent family members were killed during military operations.

I created this video Pakistan's Tribal area: Death or Development. It is really relevant to Obama's plan

Obama's new Strategy on how to deal with the region was great gift for my 40th Birthday!

Hi dear Amra, you have rightly suggested Mr. Obama to come forward with a new vision to put the backward tribal areas on the track of sustainable development, as people of tribal areas and Afghanistan don't need anymore bombs and bullets. You are right and have spoken well to turn his attention from destruction of this belt. This region is in dire need of foreign aid for progress and prosperity. These people want to pass life with dignity and peace. Sudhir

Earlier, the Obama about-turn from the course he had chosen for Pakistan days after he became President. Now, the extending of an olive branch to Pakistan's tribal areas and 'moderate' Afghanistan.

These to me point at the growing clout of Pakistan among the powers that be. I guess though, that there is good in it for all concerned - AfPak as well as US.

The chosen strategy looks prudent, as US administration seems to have finally woken up to the fact that they have been waging a losing battle in Afghanistan.

I agree, for a Pakistani national there cannot be a better birthday gift than this.

Happy Birthday, Amra. (Since this is not the post related to your birthday directly but is actually about something far bigger than that, I will not be posting the birthday cake here. That shall reach you via my response on community-guru's post). Many happy returns of the day.

I agree Amra..development should always have been the key to winning
the hearts and minds ( and bellys) in the area. Besides hunting down
Bin Laden/Taliban afer 9/11, Canada's commitment was to reconstruction
not 7 years of deadly counter-insurgency. The Taliban culture of
anger and violence fueled thru questionable religious fervour can
be better allayed in a long-term plan of rebiulding and developing
a society with good amenities (like schools, hospitals, fair courts &
police) and a growing economy. Unrest could slowly be replaced with
energy, employment and Hope for the future. I wish the Obama administration the greatest best of luck on these endeavors...for the
common good of us all!

ps I thought i'd paste this comment from another article on this subject
here as it addresses another important historic & economic issue that MUST be taken into great consideration in the "Conflict"!

It should be an interesting proposal, considering Richard Holbrooke's
statement on the "failed" and wasteful drug/poppy eradication program!
Some aid to farmers, concerted rebuilding efforts on clinics and
schools in any reasonably "pacified" areas. Small business loans to
encourage a marketplace and instead of rushing in with more "boots on
the ground" and guns blazing...hopefully some keen intelligence
operations sensitive to the culture and religion of the region.
I tuly think this would be the ideal time to encourage Afghanistan to
enter into the world of "legal" Opiates for medicines world-wide and
thereby placate the indigenous crop for constructive use and rob
both the criminals AND Jihadists of income!
