JUST when she thought that the public would finally focus on her game and not what she said or did, it seems Indian tennis star Sania Mirza has unwittingly waltzed into trouble again. And this time, the offence lies not in her clothes or words, but in a small accessory that she used for a billboard promotional campaign for a scooter brand that she endorses.
In the advertisement, the tennis star is seen with a pumped fist, sporting a wristband. Unfortunately, the wristband features a symbol most commonly associated with marijuana.
S Srinivas, general manager, marketing, of the brand involved, acknowledged that there had been an avoidable oversight. “The mistake occurred because we were unaware of the significance of the symbol on the wristband. We hired a stylist for the campaign and the clothes and accessories were chosen in tune with the brand ambassador’s style and personality. What did happen is that the wristband was totally overlooked,” admits Venu, adding that the company has already initiated corrective measures.
