SILIGURI, March 24: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Siliguri regional unit, confiscated a huge consignment of marijuana today, weighing about 3.5 ton, from a lorry driving down the Fulbari-Ghospukhur bypass.
According to Mr SK Chakrabarty, the deputy director of the DRI Siliguri unit, this is the largest marijuana seizure by a government wing in north Bengal in the past 10 years. The seizure, he said, is worth about Rs 1 crore.
“Stored in 177 packets, the drug was hidden in the lorry, beneath some coals. We got a tip off and intercepted the lorry (NL-01/D 9438) after chasing it down the Fulbari-Ghospukhur bypass at around 8.30 a.m. Unfortunately, the driver managed to escape,” said Mr Chakrabarty.
"The consignment had probably originated in Manipur and was being smuggled to Bihar," he added.
