The Israeli military condemned t-shirts that mock the killing of pregnant women and children in Gaza as "unacceptable," but Aljazeera English reports today that the "extremely disturbing images" on those t-shirts reflect some Israeli soldiers' attitudes. These T-shirts were ordered by soldiers to commemorate the end of their basic training or field duty.

Offensive images and slogans include:

  • Drawing of a pregnant Arab woman with rifle crosshairs superimposed on her abdomen with the message: "One Shot, Two Kills."
  • Drawing of a child in a rifle sight with the slogan: "The smaller they are, the harder it is."
  • Drawing of an Israeli soldier destroying a mosque with the slogan: "Only God forgives."
  • A picture of a dead Palestinian baby with his mother weeping beside him: "Better use Durex [a condom brandname]"
  • A drawing of a soldier next to a young woman with bruises: "Bet you got raped!"

Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum in Gaza commented that the incident "reflects the brutal mentality among the Zionist soldiers and the Zionist society."

Will the soldiers receive any discipline for their offensive messages? Or will the Israeli military dismiss the incident as representative of "just a few bad apples?"

When women anywhere are degraded, women everywhere are degraded. When children anywhere are dehumanized, children everywhere are dehumanized. The images accompanying this news report illustrate the questionable t-shirts. People everywhere need to question the mentality that produced them.

War dehumanizes us all. We must maintain human dignity and condemn this outrageous behavior. Thanks for your comment, slydog.

Some will dismiss this as a childish t-shirt prank missing the real point. It's the mindset behind the message that is horrible and has no place in a civilized military. (Need to hear from Jimmy Carter on this one. Need some bigger voices to speak out.) This ranks right up there with waterboarding in my opinion. Thanks for the report. Information is power.

Absolutely! Your comments highlight the gravity of the offense. "Information is power"--I love that thought. This also ranks up there with Abu Ghraib. Thanks for your comment, Audraine.

I agree with atlstoryteller -- even if the Israeli military dismisses these t-shirts as the act of only a few corrupt-minded soldiers, the fact that SOME soldier in its military have the evil and disgusting mind to put such images and words together in such a public and offensive manner should worry the military and the world.

I know one guy at my university who makes offensive jokes about mentally ill people or other vulnerable subjects, but even this, I believe would cross the line for him. It is ridiculous, unfathomable and frightening that some people (no matter if it's only a few or if it's the whole army) could make fun of the fact that they and their fellow soldiers are raping, murdering children and taking lives of adults.

In addition, the dehumanizing images on these t-shirts made by a few soldiers can definitely spread to the whole army. Soon, this kind of attitude will infect the minds of other soldiers who will become more violent and evil in their actions towards other humans (not just in the war setting). What are we fostering here? Hatred for humanity and a love for inflicting pain on others? We can't let this "small" incident pass by, because like an earthquake, little tremors and vibrations build up to a frightening shower of lava and avalanches. These acts are killing our world of peace and friendship and love and compassion. Slowly but eventually.

Thank you for your very beautiful, impassioned, and personal response! The Israeli sociologist quoted in the Al Jazeera video clip (above) also emphasizes (as you do) the cultural and societal implications of the t-shirts, how they create a culture of dehumanization that promotes violence and makes targeting the Gaza civilians acceptable. This kind of atmosphere incrementally poisons our planet, affecting us all. Again, thanks, aquamarina217.

Looks like you're new to Allvoices, radical1a. Welcome. I'm sorry that you live with such gruesome memories. Yes, you and I perceive this differently. But more significant to me, I'm not comfortable with the dynamic here that feels like labeling and stereotyping. Peace comes through justice and right relationships. Peace to you, radical1a.

We've all read Exodus and we realize the struggle of the Jewish people. And yes, bodies blown apart on buses and by Hamas rockets are not pretty things to behold. I've seen blood & Guts! And many of us
"asses in the air" as you describe us as..are sick and tired of it!
For Christ's, Moses and Mohammed's sake bury the bitterness and the bloody hatchet and get ON the process of what our collective maker intended. Truth, Justice & Freedom.

It is indeed disgusting to see such shirts and the messages conveyed via them and it was really saddening to read your post B.E. No wonder it is dehumanizing but one thing that really upsets me is the image created for Muslims world over. Just because of a few bad people who in the name of religion do gruesome acts, a pure and peace loving religion is being insulted and humiliated.

I am a Muslim, may not be a very pious one or extremely religious but I am a modest Muslim and I believe this religion in its pure entirety offers nothing but peace and brotherhood. I wish, I just so badly wish, I could do something to clarify those people who bad mouth Islam that this religion has never considered killing humans a moral act but the only message this religion promotes is of unity, peace, brotherhood, love, care, honesty and respect.

P.S: Your post is an eye-opener dear B.E!

Majdy, thank you for your wonderful comment. I so share your sentiments. Yesterday I noticed a young Muslim--a wonderful and loving man--at his morning prayer: bowing, yes, much as we Catholics may genuflect or kneel. It hurts me to see his/your religion maligned. I know that Christian extremists also bring dishonor to the heart of beautiful Christianity, and many Christians can overlook this while noticing flaws in another.

Karen Armstrong recently said [ http://www.pbs.org/moyers/journal/03132009/transcript1.html ] "Whichever religious tradition I study, I find that the heart of it is the idea of feeling with the other, experiencing with the other, compassion. And every single one of the major world religions has developed its own version of the Golden Rule. Don't do to others what you would not like them to do to you."

Let's keep working for a world where posts like this one will never have to be written. Love to you and peace, Majdy!

If I could see hope for this world to change its perception, I would say it is this comment of yours which has given motivation to keep spreading good word as an ambassador of peace and love - emotions which know no boundaries. Thank you so much for such an encouragement, my dear friend! :-)

Peace and love to you, B.E!
