US may miss 2010 Expo, China worries

China's Ambassador to the US Zhou Wenzhong said on March 20 that China is willing to offer great support if the US could make itself participate in the 2010 Shanghai Expo. The American organizers have been struggling to raise the US$61 million through private funding to build a pavilion, which is necessary for the event. Direct governmental funding to such participation is not allowed by the US law. So far,185 countries and 47 international organizations have confirmed their presences in the Expo, which will run from May to Oct next year in Shanghai. Pavilions have to start their construction no later than this June in order to be ready in time. The US missed the 2000 Expo in Hanover, Germany but attended the 2005 event in Aichi, Japan thanks to the support from Japanese companies. The financial aid that China has is as high as US$100 million, but it is only for developing countries, according to Zhu Yonglei, deputy director general of the Bureau of Shanghai World Expo Coordination.
Zhu said it could cause great regret for the US if it failed to raise the fund because "it's a chance for the US to present its new image to the whole world." source:http://www.shanghaidaily.com/sp/article/2009/200903/20090321/article_394945.htm

I think they re a bit "strapped" for dough at this juncture in time!
I'm not sure if the American Public really feels a Pavillion in
China is a prectical expenditure, considering. One would hope the
"private sector" (if any left!) could step to the plate.

ha, i also think so, there is nothing more important to turn around the economy for the American right now. I just think that our gov. is a bit irritated.

U guys need to work harder to get sponsors' cash:)

I can't see "bailed out" banks as sponsors at this juncture.
Personally, I remember the Moscow Summer Olympics of 1980 being
