There is shortage of gound and surface water in NWFP specially in FATA and parts of Hazara. Lands in these regions of NWFP are fertile and are suitable to grow profitable crops, fruits and vegetables. Land holdings in these areas are smalland farmers are very poor. There is a need to educate farmers for switching to sustainable farming through innovation and partnership with leading companies and organizations. Drip and sprinkle irrigation systems can help farmers to grow all kinds of fruits and vegetables in hese beautiful areas. Farmers can start producing fresh vegetables and market them to earn cash and also for household consumption. These systems can be run on electricity, generators, solar panels and also manually. Technologies are easily available and are extremely cost effective. There is dire need to introduce these technological innovations in FATA, Swat and Hazara so farmers and people can benefit from feresh crops grown locally. Both government and non governmental organizations can effectively contribute to uplift the farming community and help sustain their farm production.
Farmers of these regions are extremely hardworking and can achieve a great deal of self sufficiency in domestic consumption if government and private organizations or NGOs come forward and develop a plan to introduce drip and sprinkle irrgation. This will help conserve water usage and optimize fertilizer and chemical usage.
