Things are getting a little "dicey" North of 60... a place that's always

icy..and other Governments ain't playin' nicey. Everybody wants a

big slice of Eskimo Pie these days. Canada's Arctic backyard has been

challenged lately by the US, Russian and Danish Governments.

Each are addressing these issues through International Law of the

Sea tribunals and various other governing bodies. I suppose as

it warms up and the ice has begun to recede, soon oil, mineral and

fishery exploitation will become lucrative. Is this just another

Boom & Bust in the making? Get in there..pillage the resources..

poison the Environment and make a fast buck into the bargain.

Just like the Boreal & Tropical rain forests of the world are our

lungs, so too the Northern expanse of ice is important. It is our

polar regions that provide us with much weather and "air conditioning"

Subs, trawlers, oil tankers, drilling rigs and mine tailing ponds will

take their demanding toll on the barren, but delicate, ecosystem.

We had better watch this closely..it may not be "Santa Claus"

coming to town.

(PS..The Stan Rogers /CBC news video attached to story is a MUST SEE!)
