The following is a more appropriately correct translation of "Jai ho" by Pink angel.

I disagree, with mm649968 and Mr. Purohit on a couple of points.

mm649968 translates the first line as follows:

"aaja aaja jind shamiyaane ke taley"
Come, come my Life, under the canopy

This is just plain wrong. The word "jind" or "zind" does not mean "my life". I think people are confusing it for the endearment, which would be "my life" or "my love". But "zind" is short for "zinda", not "zindagi", and it means "living" not "life".

The correct translation would therefore be: "come under the living canopy"

Mr Purohit translates it even more fancifully as "below the decorated tent of life", which simply doesn't follow from the words at all.

To understand the meaning, you have to take in the context. This song is the counterpoint to an earlier scene in the movie, when Jamal and Latika meet for the first time. It's pouring rain, Jamal and Salim are sheltering under a tin roof, while Latika is outside, getting drenched by the rain. Until Jamal invites her in.

"Under the living canopy" and more specifically the next line "under the silver threaded blue sky" are just a poetic way of referring to the outdoors, that the sky has cleared, their troubles are gone, they can come out now.

Note: "zari" refers to silver/gold thread used to make brocade, hence "silver threaded sky", or a sky with silvery stars.

The first paragraph in mm's translation also doesn't make sense. He translates it as:

"Ratti Ratti Sachi Maine Jaan Gavayi Hai"
Iota by iota, I have lost my life, in faith

I'm sorry, but there's zero reference to faith in the original. Mr. Purohit's translation is more exact there, though it doesn't convey the full sense. Again, the context is important. The first paragraph is about how Jamal has felt during all those years when Latika was lost to him, not knowing where she was, not knowing what was happening to her.

A more exact translation with this in mind would be:

"Ratti ratti sachchi maine jaan gawayi hai"
Truly, I have lost my life bit by bit

"Nach Nach koylon pe raat bitaayi hai"
Spent the night dancing on cinders

"Ankhiyon ki neend maine phoonkon se udaa di"
Driven the sleep from my eyes

"Gin gin taarey maine ungli jalayi hai"
Burned my finger counting the stars

In other words, doing stuff that people do when they are painfully uncertain, can't sleep, torture themselves with "what ifs", try to while away the time forcing themselves not to think about whatever it is they are worried about, etc.

This leads on to the next paragraph, about the relief when this period is over:

"Chakh le, haan chakh le, yeh raat shehed hai"
Taste it, yes taste it, this night is like honey

"Chakh le, haan rakh le"
Taste it, yes, save it

"Dil hai, dil aakhri hadd hai"
It's the heart, the heart is the final limit

"Kaala kaala kaajal tera"
The black kohl in your eyes ...

"Koi kaala jaadu hai na?"
It's some black magic, isn't it?

From there, it just keeps descending into mushy romance:

"kab se haan kab se jo lab pe ruki hai"
You've been holding it back from your lips for so long

"Keh de, keh de, haan keh de"

"Ab aankh jhuki hai"
Now that your eyes are downcast

"Aisi aisi roshan aankhein"
How your eyes glow

As someone who has translated a few things in college, translating is very subjective which in turn causes several different translations to come from one document.

In class we never seemed to have two translations exactly the same; of course, some of them were just plain wrong but still...
