The Valentine’s Day that got hurt by global recession

The global recession get a good whack at the most revered ay of the year – Valentine’s. After all its only once in a year when you get to actually celebrate love. For some it’s perhaps the only chance to get lucky. Any how this day is marked by some explosive stunts at the departmental stores where people rush in to get their hands on exotic valentine goodies, for some the actual fire works start at night.

In any case you have to invest in order to reap some benefit. And this year has been quite shallow on pockets. One study shows that people’s propensity to spend, comparing from the last year, has decreased from $122 to $102. Which means no high-tech gizmos or that exotic red valentine edition lingerie at Victoria’s secret. But that really doesn’t mean the end of the world.

A little creativity does come in handy in these desperate times. When I spoke to people about their valentine day extravaganza, as opposed to their (women) usual complaints, most women were very happy that their significant other half did not just buy them out with an expensive gift. Many women confessed that this was probably their best valentine’s day ever. A friend of mine had her surprise when boyfriend baked her a strawberry cake with icing on the top that looked very unprofessional but according to her ‘just did the trick’. A very established advertising executive told me that her guy gave her a nice spa treatment when she got home from work ‘…there were roses, sweet aromatic smell of potpourri and his hands all over me, he made my day.’

So the motto of the story remains the same, in order for a nice year to follow, treat your woman (or man) with the respect they deserve and invest in the relationship by not money but just by letting them know that you are there for them. . . and you shall get your reward. . . when the lights go out and both of you snuggle under the sheets and make some fireworks.
