India seems to be turning into a selective democracy with rabble rousers and regressive men holding sway.
There are posters in Srinagar that have issued a dire threat: If we find you with somebody of the opposite sex on Valentine's Day, we will hand you over to the police or shave your head. Praveen Muthalik, the leader of the Sri Ram Sena which is now notorious for beating up young women in a Mangalore pub, says he plans to unleash yet more violence on February 14. In Rajasthan, parents are being told to stop letting their girls out after dark and even to confiscate their daughters' mobile phones. Some people apparently want to prevent anyone from receiving or sending Valentine's Day greetings.
Reacting strongly to Mr. Muthalik's statement, Karnataka's Home Minister V. S. Acharya has said that law will take its course against those indulging in anyuntoward activity. The Bangalore city police is also taking this threat seriously.
It seems that people like Pramod Muthalik are just out to sensationalize issues to get media bytes.
