Imagine a person smuggling a pair of live pigeons, two eggs and some seeds in his pants. Is it possible? If yes, then what could be the reason behind such a peculiar way of smuggling pigeons, and that only, two? Such an incident happened in Australia when an Australian traveler who was flying from Dubai to Melbourne, was caught on arrival with two live pigeons stuffed in his pants.
According to a news report, the authorities searched the man when they found two eggs in a vitamin container in his luggage. The man who was only 23 year old was also carrying seeds in his money belt and an undeclared eggplant. The officials found two pigeons wrapped in padded envelopes held to each leg. The funny thing was that both pigeons were still alive! To the security officials, this young man is suspected as a bird smuggler. If found guilty, he can be convicted of wildlife smuggling that carries a penalty of 10 years of imprisonment and a fine of 110,000 Australian dollar.
Although the pigeons found in this man’s pants were not the endangered ones but still the birds, eggs and seeds have been sent to Quarantine Service to access the health risks associated with bringing birds in to the country. One view could be that this young man was in fact a bird smuggler trying to get away by stuffing live pigeons in his pants but then what good would only two pigeons do to him when they are not even any rare breed or something?
The first thought that came to my mind after reading this news was, what if this silly boy was only trying to hide these birds to take them from Dubai to his home in Melbourne because he wanted to keep them as pets. At least two eggs and some seeds explain the fact that maybe he was thinking of keeping them as pets with him with no intentions of smuggling any birds, whatsoever!
