A basic commodity of man is now also taken up as a measure of wealth and demonstration of agricultural might. These are some of the world's most expensive vegetables and meet products that are cultivated under controlled conditions and just a bite of these scrumptious delights is an experience many crave for. The first item on this appetizing list is Saffron, a spice that is grown world wide, however requires at least 50,000 – 70,000 flowers just to extract a pound of it. This means including the labor and the land required for such mass production, a pound of this spice sells somewhere from US $500 - $5000. From spice we come to nuts. The most expensive of these is the Macadamia nut. It takes around 7 – 10 years for a macadamia tree to produce these nuts. Once produced, the inside of these hard nuts, is a fine kernel coating comprising of oil and sugar. The cost of a kilogram of these nuts goes up to $30 US. It's a misconception that the most expensive caviar is black, which is false, its actually Almas caviar. Almas in Iranian means diamond. The beluga caviar comes from over a 100 years old (virtually unchanged for 120 million years). The luxurious caviar comes from as early as the dinosaur era. The Beluga caviar sells for more than $5000 US big bucks. The most expensive mushrooms in the world are the white truffle. They have their origins from the northern Italy. The astonishing fact however is that this fungus can grow up to 12 cm wide and can weigh up to 500 grams. A pound of these mushrooms can fetch a price as high as $ 2700 US. A record price for white truffle was paid by Stanley Hu, the owner of Macau Casino when he bought 1.5 kilograms of this exotic fungus for a staggering $330,000 US! One of my favorite vegetable – potato. The most expensive potato however is the 'La Bonnotte'. Only a 100 tons of this very rare potato is cultivated every year on the island Noirmoutier. Seaweed is the only form of fertilizer that is used to enrich this vegetable and not just any seaweed, only from the surrounding water. One kilogram of this potato can cost you 500 euros as this type of potato is very rare and virtually extinct.
