Today I was pleasantly engaged in a very interesting discussion with a batch-mate of mine and the topic was how brilliant are some minds in the world. We talked about some of the wonders that came in to existence just because of some brilliant minds in the world starting from the great pyramids of Egypt to all the wonders of this day and age.
It was then that my friend asked me if I knew about The World Islands and I said no, and he said to me, “Go check it on the web, oh you have got to see it, man!” After checking it, I now know exactly why he was so excited for me to see this beautiful creation of a brilliant mind.
The World Islands is a man-made archipelago of 300 islands constructed in the shape of a world map. It is located over 4 kilometers off the coast of Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Developed by Nakheel properties, the idea was originally conceived by Sheikh Mohammad bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai.
The artificial “World” is one of the several artificial islands projects being constructed in Dubai, including the Palm islands. Like the other artificial islands, The World is primarily constructed using sand dredged from the sea. The project was unveiled on May 6, 2003 by the ruler himself, and by January 2008, 60% of the islands had been sold. On January 10, 2008, the final stone on the breakwater was laid, completing the initial development of the World islands.
The overall development cost of The World was estimated at $14 billion with each individual island price ranging between $15 and $50 million. There have been many rumors of celebrities buying islands including Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt rumored to have bought the Island Ethiopia which has been since denied by the celebrity couple.
I found out a few videos of The World Islands and I hope you enjoy watching yet another amazing piece that is the result of some brilliant minds at work starting from conceiving such a spectacular idea to turning it into an awe-inspiring reality.
