Can Wii Save Blockbuster

Blockbuster was once the king of movie rental. But no one wants to trudge down the street to pick up a movie anymore when he can just download it on to his home player. Blockbuster has been slow to capture relevant opportunities and stood by while losing share to nimbler rivals like Netflix.

But Blockbuster is forging a relationship with CinemaNow which gives it access to delivering video on the Nintendo Wii. The Wii has the highest consumer base among next generation consoles and thus the opportunity for Blockbuster would be tremendous.

But there's more here than meets the eye. For starters, the Wii is hardly a technological behemoth. Its limited hard drive space and lack of HD video means it may not be the ideal delivery system for video content beyond anime clips and YouTube. Also, at present Nintendo is only pushing for video with Wiis in Japan without confirming plans to expand.

The Wii has plenty of room for expansion, and it would certainly make sense for Nintendo to offer a service to compete with Netflix on the Xbox 360.Personally, I'd love to be able to watch video on demand with my Wii.

I don't think the Wii can save Blockbuster. First of all, the new video feature on the Wii is a secondary feature. The primary feature is obviously gaming. I'm sure many users will take advantage of video, but I don't think it will create a market large enough to keep Blockbuster running.
