I got an invite from a friend to an event over Facebook. I heard about this shooting on News Years Day from another friend, but didn't know much about the event then. I figured it was a "normal" arrest situation and that the officer was in danger. When I got the invite I looked at the footage of the event and it was truly shocking. The officer really pulled his gun, and a shot went off. To me it is unclear whether it was accidental or not but I cannot see any reason why he had to free his gun in the first place. Events such as these just feed further into a distrust of the police and other law enforcement agencies, especially since the victim was a young black male.

Incredibly sad in so many ways. I suggest you watch the video taken from one of the many eye witnesses. It is hard not to be affected. It is such a tragedy.

From the Facebook event you can read:
"On Jan 1st in the early morning hours, BART police detained a young black man named Oscar Grant along with several other people at Fruitvale BART. In front of hundreds of witnesses (and captured on numerous videos) he was cooperative and in fear of his life, actually pleading with officers not to be tase or shoot him. Soon thereafter officers pushed him to the ground and began to handcuff him. One officer then stood, drew his weapon, and shot Oscar in the back at point blank range, killing him. Officers at the scene then handcuffed the dying man as his life drained from him, and spent their energy trying to confiscate witnesses videos of the incident.

A week later, BART police has given no explanation to the public. They are pleading for "patience" and trying to concoct possible excuses for what is a blatant police execution of this young man. They have not even interviewed the officer who killed Oscar. But you don't have to believe me or the news stories or the hundreds of witnesses who saw this. And you don't need to wait for the results of a bogus so-called "investigation". You can watch the video yourself, but beware, it is a graphic video. An innocent, peaceful human being is being brutally murdered. Once you see this you will not be able to forget it."

Since they're cops, they feel like they're above the law. There was absolutely no reason to fire a gun. The fact that they still haven't given an explanation, and the fact that after the shooting they were trying to confiscate all video footage makes it obvious that they knew what they were doing, and they knew what they did was wrong. Let's hope they don't get away with this. It is really unfortunate for the victim and his family.
