Finally a much cheered move by the government has found the right path. The year 2008 saw an unprecedented increase in the number of corrupt ministers and officials nabbed by the Karnataka Lokayukta. For the ignorant, Lokayukta is an anti-corruption cell started by the state government. The cell was commissioned in 2001 primarily to clean up the system by netting the big fishes in our society unearthing assets disproportionate to their known sources of income.
In 2008, as many as 280 traps were laid and 88 raids were conducted in which assets exceeding Rs 1.8 billion were discovered. This is a staggering increase from the 2007 figure of 116 traps. Lokayukta Justice Santosh Hegde attributed the success to the public support, for without their complaints they would not have been able to catch the corrupt. “We have as many as 23,000 cases pending, speedy disposal is the need of the hour”, said Justice Hegde. A 24-hour helpline has also been set up to receive complaints.
The drive has surely sent ripples across all those anti social officials and hope corruption is in check soon. What is even more awe-inspiring is the fact that the Karnataka Lokayukta has now surpassed the CBI in the number of raids trapping corrupt officials. Long live Lokayukta!!
