American spies offer Afghan warlords viagra in return for intel

AFGHAN warlords are being given sex drug Viagra by US spies in return for information.

In one case, a 60-year-old tribal chief with four wives was given four of the blue diamond-shaped pills and days later supplied details of Taleban movements in return for more.

A CIA agent said: "He was beaming. After that, we could do whatever we wanted in his area."

Another operative said: "We do whatever it takes to influence people."

More traditional CIA bribes such as money and guns can pose problems because weapons might be used against American forces and money can compromise an informant who is not careful about how visibly it is spent.

Jamie Smith, a former CIA officer, said: "If you give money, an asset will go out and buy the shiniest junk he can find.

"If he doesn't get killed, he becomes ineffective as an informant, as everyone knows where he got it."

Other inducements being offered include visas, dental work, toys, medicine and school equipment.
